What steps can you take to show your boss you're ready for a promotion?

Be the boss. Output is correlational to excellence. Your boss is your mentor, a peer or someone who has responsibility towards not just you but your team and the company. Just like you. So, be a team player with your boss - trust, respect, engage, exchange, ideate and yes, be the Boss! You can not negotiate for anything with empty hands. Your work should speak for yourself. Fisrtly - I will ensure that I excel at my current role. That can only happen when I am constantly upskilling & setting overly aggressive goals for myself Secondly, I will take initiative outside my current project - It could be anything like mentoring a junior, raising my hand to solve an organization wide challenge or arranging for a CSR event etc Thirdly, I would act as if I am already operating at next level - Which means demonstrate immense leadership by resolving complex issues, even if I am not a formal leader, I should be able to guide the team effectively

If you want your boss to see you're ready for a promotion, do your job really well and take on extra tasks. Tell your boss you're interested in moving up and talk about your career goals. The first step isn’t about setting smart goals it’s about ensuring you are ready and have been meeting with your manager regularly. There are 3 ways to get a promotion . Its not about setting smart goals first , its about building trust, credibility and whether your skip manager and his peers know about your performance too 1. When you are able to help him solve a problem he will support you in your aspirations too. 2 Make sure you find a way to build relationships with your skip manager and his peers and that they are aware of your contributions. As you get senior there is normally a promotions board that decides. Unless you have support at that level, its unlikely you will get promoted 3 Take on and Deliver on strategic projects that have visibility.

Feedback should not only occur once a year in an annual review. Direct, situational feedback promotes better and faster development. Therefore, always seek feedback regularly, especially in new situations.

Demonstrate growth potential by actively pursuing feedback. Schedule one-on-ones with your manager to get their candid perspective on your strengths and areas for improvement. Ask trusted colleagues where you can level up skills. Seek constructive criticism without defensiveness - this shows maturity and ambition. Consider 360 reviews to spotlight blindspots. Synthesize common themes in the feedback and craft a focused action plan. Then visibly act on the advice by adopting new practices, taking on challenges and completing training. Briefly review progress and impacts with your manager. This feedback loop exhibits you are highly self-aware, hungry for excellence and capable of turning advice into results.

You need to do more than just seek feedback - you need to learn how to hear it, process it and then act on it. If you ask for feedback, but then argue its validity or do nothing about it, you will undermine your own integrity. Build a practice of approaching feedback with curiosity. Ask probing questions to understand root causes and seek examples. Be open minded about what you hear, knowing that it's not a critical reflection of you as a person, but one of the keys to unlocking the next stages of your career.

Yes feedback is critical but again, work with your manager to support guiding you where you want to go. Not all feedback is created equal and you want to make sure the feedback is moving you and your goals forward. Be intentional and strategic as to when you ask for it in service of your timeline.

Organise information conversation with the potential hiring manager and other stakeholders that you would be working with. Tell them you are ready for something more and you'd like to know what you're areas of improvement are. Take lots of notes and remember feedback is a gift (even though it might not feel that way when you're receiving it)

Specifically, I think and act beyond my position. I function as an independent contributor and leap at any opportunity to take over lead responsibilities my boss does not have time for. When there are team questions, I ask them cross-functionally until we have the correct answer. I even advocate for myself by highlighting wins during 1:1 meetings. I also mentor teammates who need help. I make sure not to stretch too much, lest my primary responsibilities suffer. I will lean into temporary discomfort, though. Instead of waiting to be noticed, though, it never hurts to just tell your manager that you are ready. Practice vulnerability and speak up.

You have to raise your hand, and help your leaders notice you, specially in large organizations is though to put the burden of spotting talent just on the leaders, there has to be some personal initiative to be noticed, being careful of not overdoing it, there is a fine balance between helping your case being noticed and trying to steel the spotlight or overshadow everyone else. The best way to make your self know is by taking on the toughest challenges and finding solutions to them, this helps you, your leaders and the organization.

Become a go to person that doesn't just know about your department but all workings of the business. It shows your ability to see the big picture and how everything works together for the good of the business. I always tried to not just become an expert at my job, but also as someone who knew a little bit of everything about the organization. It was the greatest compliment when people would tell new employees to connect with me (whether we worked in the same department or not) because I was a great resource and would help them feel welcome.

Networking, both internally within the company, is an optimal condition for being considered for the next promotion. Your presence helps people remember you.

As a coach I’m biased on this one but to not upskill and assume you will get the promotion is unrealistic. With an ever changing workplace landscape, knowing how to navigate it is critical if not foundational.

Not to mention if you want to advance, you should invest time, often outside work, to read books, register in online courses and learn for certifications. Your boss will notice your efforts in going the extra mile and will take this into consideration when the right time comes.

Can you add that said value without being promoted? If yes, it will logically be "cheaper" for the organisation to keep you in the same position. Depending on how you answer the previous questions, you may want to consider:- i) Letting the key stakeholders and decision makers know the added value you can bring if they promote you. ii) Forget about the promotion, its not worth the effort. One must focus on getting the job done and getting better and better, upskill, lean and improve. When your target is the promotion, in my opinion you already lost the right focus.

Consider the timing.... A few times in my career, leadership acknowledged my skills, determination and ability to execute, but the timing was not right for a promotion or new role. Sometimes there are other economic or business factors that just do not make it feasible. Don't give up! Continue to remind your leadership of your goal and ask how you can actively take steps toward getting there.
