What steps can you take to prepare for a writing career while still in school?

I agree, read a lot. But read GOOD writing of all genres, from English literature to pulp fiction to great newspaper columnists. It's not quite osmosis, but almost. Here's a secret -- the classics are classics for a reason.

It is said that the best writers are the best readers. If you want to pursue a writing career, you need to read widely and crazily. Read your school books and also outside of it. You need to even read your dictionary. Just something to improve your vocabulary. Don't limit yourself to what you read. That is a great start.

An exercise that I use in playwriting classes but that could be used for every kind of writing is to make some seriously mathematical rules before you even start to think about content. For example, say you are going to write a very short story. Write sentences in this order: the first sentence has 5 syllables, second has 7 syllables, third has 5, fourth has 9, fifth has 1, sixth has 5. Now begin. What you can learn from this is the elasticity of language. Also, by proceeding in this way, you may get some of your defenses out of the way and find that a very true version of yourself is coming out, because you are only concerned with getting the syllable count right.

Seeking for feedbacks from your friends or mentor is crucial for your growth. Yes criticism can be hard but be open to hearing others opinions about your work. Remember you are not writing ?? only for you to accept it but for your writing to be accepted by all.

When you write, give to people to read and not just people, but professionals, or people who are at least experienced writers. Give to them to read and get back to you on corrections and better constructive methods. You should also be open to criticisms as a writer, even as a pro. You're not free from mistakes. So when the feedback in form of criticisms come, you take them and improve on yourself.

Feedback is so important for writing. We always write for an audience so we need to be prepared for that audience. So we need to think about who we want to give us feedback. Are our colleagues and fellow students representative of the audience we want? Apart from identifying how engaging our story is for an audience, feedback can be about checking the veracity of the information we’ve used or about locating flaws in aspects of style.

Opportunities are waiting in school. Your teachers are sitting on annals to get you published. They may seem like small pebbles, but they have a way to creating stepping stones on your path. Make a goal to get yourself published and watch what happens!

In building a writing career, you need to leave your comfort zone for people out there to see you. Engage in writing contests, join writing communities, volunteer to work as a content writer in some organizations. In doing this, you not only get the experience but it can even get you connections and referrals. No body started off as a pro, we all started from doing all this. So, you too starting off need to follow it.

As a writer, you need to explore new skills. The world has gone digital and you need to learn different skills. It's not such a bad idea to diversify your income when time comes. In doing this, you'll be very ready when any opportunity of any sort present itself. You won't have to start learning that particular skill all over again.

For me, I knew I wanted to be a professional writer from secondary school. So, I ended up studying English at the university. Write something everyday, even if it’s a Haiku. Discipline yourself to write even when you aren’t motivated to do so. Learn to look at your writing like an editor might. Don’t get so attached to your work, that you’re the only one who understands it. Subscribe to publications in the genre you’re pursuing. Writers Digest and Publishers Weekly are excellent for creative writers. Start building your portfolio now. Enter contests, publish in academic publications. And, most importantly, do it because you absolutely love it.

Learn how to draw. Drawings make a book better; especially a science book. Much easier to comprehend a drawing of molecular biology & biochemistry, then a description of it. Accumulate quotes from the geniuses of the past, and season the text with them.

You should write for more than just money and fame. Writing has always been a form of therapy for me, my happy place. My writing also helps me figure out the world around me. There's nothing more satisfying than writing a piece that says to the reader, "Look what I just figured out about why so many people behave the way they do," and getting comments of agreement or disagreement, thus starting a dialogue, which what all good writing should strive to do.

Allow yourself to try out different modalities and applications of your passion! I wish that I weren't gunning so hard to graduate, and instead, gave myself an opportunity to luxuriate in learning. If I could go back, I'd do that, because now, I apply all the different avenues of learning into the work I do with my clients!

When I was in high school, I rejoiced inwardly any time my English teacher gave us a writing assignment. This work didn't have to be fiction, nor did it have to be a research report. Instead, it could have been as simple as writing something from our imaginations. If the instructor chose, we sometimes were able to read our assignments to the rest of the class. While I am (and was) a shy person, I wanted some good feedback. What can I do to make my writing better? Did my story or article get your attention? These assignments fulfilled something within me. I realized how much I liked creating something from virtually nothing. While I wouldn't put pen to paper for years, that need to create images and scenes with words stayed inside me.

The more you enjoy writing the more your words will transmute your joy. When you don't care, the words always reveal it. Writing is still an art. Enjoy it.

Start your formal portfolio. It doesn't matter even if it is just a sentence. Have it documented! You can anyway edit it later. It gives you a sense of accomplishment and also motivates you to never stop.
