And in case you haven't realized it, HR is a business discipline that helps organizations manage their people and resources most effectively. If you are pursuing HR cause you like working with people, uh, have you considered social work? Don't limit yourself to your area of HR. Step out of your comfort zone and learn the business - whatever it is your company does. If you're considering masters education get an MBA, not an HR degree. The foundation provided will serve you better.

One thing I have found helpful is to allow yourself to be a life-long learner and understand that there are always new, innovative, and sometimes controversial workplace topics that you need to learn to weave into your day to day as an HR professional. Keeping up with trends both in the larger workplace and in your industry will help to build a long term career in HR. When you stay still...that is, when you don't find ways to stay up to date with trends and expectations of the workforce, that puts you behind and can lead to dissatisfaction in your HR career. For long term career success, we must be agile in the face of change.

Any career first requires you to build depth. I coach and mentor all young professionals that the foundation of any career rests on building expertise and the first 8-10 years are critical to build depth in whichever area you are interested to build your career in. You have to try everything, soak in knowledge like a sponge and be a constant learner. Best way is to get hands dirty and find challenging, stretching assignments/projects. Long term career is dependent upon all your experiences combined, expertise built. No point if you have spend 15 years doing 9 different jobs, because while the breadth is good, you wont be identified as a subject matter expert in anyone area.
