1 Learn the basics

Learning the foundations of Cloud is always a great way to start. As there are different cloud service providers, mainly GCP, Azure and AWS, it is advisable to understand what each of these have to offer and how those services and security tools correlate with the other cloud service providers. In general the concept is the same and transferable. It’s also a great idea to start with a vendor neutral approach first when jumping into learning the cloud. For example CCSK has a wealth knowledge covering some of the most important concepts and best practices applicable to any cloud environment. Taking such a studies or certification, and then proceeding to the vendor specific education of choice is a great idea.

2 Choose a cloud platform

There are many cloud service providers in the market, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and IBM Cloud. Each of them has its own features, tools, and certifications for cloud security. You need to choose one or more platforms that suit your interests, goals, and employer requirements. You can start by exploring their free or low-cost offerings, such as AWS Free Tier, Azure Free Account, GCP Free Trial, or IBM Cloud Lite. You can also use their documentation, tutorials, and blogs to learn more about their security capabilities and best practices.

The more clouds you familiarize yourself with - the better. This diversity in different cloud vendors allow for greater stability in your education and critical moments. For example, if one vendor formats logs one certain way - relative to others in the industry - you’ll be able to spot that difference sooner than others and quantify why something like that may (or may not be a problem). The more inputs in your learning - the better.

3 Get certified

One of the best ways to demonstrate your cloud security skills and knowledge is to get certified by a reputable organization. There are many certifications available for different levels and domains of cloud security, such as CompTIA Cloud+, (ISC)2 CCSP, AWS Certified Security Specialty, Azure Security Engineer Associate, Google Professional Cloud Security Engineer, or IBM Certified Cloud Security Professional. In my opinion; having a comprehensive knowledge of security is very important and ISC2- CISSP is the one that covers all (mostly) aspects of information security. Once a background in Security is there; a cloud specific certification would be beneficial.

4 Gain hands-on experience

While certifications can help you validate your cloud security skills, nothing beats hands-on experience. You need to apply what you have learned to real-world scenarios and challenges. You can gain experience by working on projects, internships, or jobs that involve cloud security tasks, such as configuring firewalls, encrypting data, monitoring logs, or auditing policies. You can also use online platforms, such as Cloud Academy, Qwiklabs, or Cloud Playground, to practice your skills in a simulated environment. Open a cloud account in AWS, GCP, or anywhere you wish to expand your skillset. Several services have free tiers to play around with. Look to build tools in these accounts such as self-hosting a journal, a password manager like Bitwarden or even standup a static website/resume. This will allow you to familiarize yourself with spinning up services and managing security controls around IAM, networking rules and more. Network with people in cloudops at your company and see if you can work along side a project that is cloud centric, even if only to observe. Never be afraid to ask a question. If you are uncertain of something or if something isn't clicking, reach out.

Go to at least one major cloud/cloud security conference per year Take note on the trends that you hear vendors ‘shouting from the rooftops’ in the expo halls. Some of the trends are bunk/not serious - but some of them (especially repeated themes) can turn into a ‘norm’ with the industry for years to come. This can help you stay ahead of the learning curves out there - and those learning curves can happen or come around so fast. One more thing - stay close to everything SANS teaches on Cloud Security. The folks over there (at SANS) are absolutely brilliant and they completely understand the trends or forecasts (pun intended) with cloud. Stay close to SANS and attend at least one major cloud or cloud security conference every year.
