One area of understanding that can be difficult to uncover is that of assumed capabilities. When people provide you feature wish-lists they often do so assuming an underlying capabilities without articulating those assumptions, often because they really haven't thought about it that much. One tool that can be used to uncover such assumptions are 'how' and 'why' questions. "How does what you just said benefit you as user?" "Why do you need that feature?" then "Why is that important to you?". A variation on the 5-Whys theme, it will help you flesh out those pesky unspoken or unrecognized needs early in the process. A much preferred alternative to letting them rear their ugly heads during the development cycle, potentially derailing progress.

In my experience, it is very helpful when stakeholders and team members understand the product 'why'. Take the time to ensure your product vision clearly articulates the purpose of the product, identifies target users and the problem(s) the product solves for them, as well as any long-term goals for the product. Understanding this broader context in which the product is to exist will go a long way to informing good decision-making along the development path.
