As someone who transitioned to technical writing from IT infrastructure, the steps would be fairly similar. I don't have an advanced degree so I completed a technical writing certification course and built up my writing portfolio by creating various instruction sets, guides, how to articles, etc for my employer at the time. I also spent time regularly researching what the field of technical writing was all about and tailored my resume based on that. I hired a professional resume writer who altered my resume based on my goals at the time as well. I've been a full-time professional technical writer for 2 and 1/2 years now. There are many different styles of technical writing. You should research what you think you can do. There is a large difference between writing company policies and legal documents, API documentation, and software tutorials. Don't assume because you find one more difficult than the other, you can't do one of the others. A good technical writer has several inate traits. You are naturally inclined to teach yourself things. You follow directions well. You work well with people, because you will need to talk to and bother experts to get the information you need. Once you've determined the "area" of technical writing you want to try and perform, find documentation in that style, things like tutorials and writings, and try to improve them. Take a situation like learning a new skill in Photoshop and re-write it for another user. Have that person follow the directions and provide you with feedback. You must always be learning. Choose a skill you naturally know how to do, and write your own set of steps on how to accomplish it. Learn HTML/CSS to build a knowledge base. Learn Camtasia so you can create tutorial videos. Practice voiceovers. You may be the one creating help videos. Learn Photoshop as you will be doing image manipulation. Word is significant to know well.

More than anything, have good examples of your writing. Have examples of help videos you have created. More than anything, examples will be essential to obtaining a job. Please make sure they are free of ALL errors. Next, showcase your skills. Show videos that you have made show documents, and show a portfolio website. These things show that you are taking things a step further. If you have built the website yourself, it can showcase your HTML/CSS skills. And it shows that you care. References and contacts will always be essential. The more people who can vouch for you, the better. Learn to write a resume to get to the top of HR software. There are lots of tutorials on this on the web. Reddit is another good source.

In my experience, the saying “It’s who you know…” rings true. Find the industry experts to follow, ask questions, strike up conversations, see what others are posting, discussing and following. It is often true that there is someone who knows someone who knows someone who can be very helpful, no matter the task, profession or expertise.

This is always an advantage for someone if they know the person hiring or if you have a contact who can vouch for you. In my experience, this always gives you an advantage, but it also gives others an advantage over you. Don't let this dissuade you, though. If you have a likeable personality and/or top-shelf skills and examples you will always be in the mix of the selection.

It is beneficial for Technical Authors to be involved in, at least, the testing of any new IT development. Having exposure to the product at this stage will: - Help identify potential areas where challenges may be encountered and so additional guidance may need to be provided to users. - Enable the support, user and related documentation to be developed prior to the launch/ adoption of the product. As a technical author, you need to be able to 'see the bigger picture', whilst being able to drill into the detail to provide the details that your audience requires. As a result you need a good understanding of different types of audience and how to provide relevant details 'at their level'. As a result, technical authors increasingly need to have a good understanding of IT, component interactions/ dependencies, IT security, etc. These factors can then be incorporated into any documentation that is produced at a level suited for the audience. Remember IT technologies are getting more integrated, complex and open to ever changing security risks. So your technical author needs at least a good understanding of these and related topics.
