What are the steps to becoming a Sales mentor?

In my professional experience, I have consistently paired members of the sales team with seasoned mentors who possess diverse sales styles, including consultative and relationship-based approaches. This strategy benefits both the mentor and the mentee, fostering enduring business connections built on trust and professionalism. By engaging in this mentorship dynamic, experienced professionals are reminded of the fundamental principles of sales, while new sales professionals gain access to a wealth of knowledge and fresh perspectives. As a result, this symbiotic relationship cultivates lifelong learning and growth within the sales field.

I think the most important consideration is your willingness to give your time and guidance to another person. While having great expertise is helpful, even newer leaders who are willing to assist those who are even newer is a positive first step towards building connections and partnerships that will last your entire career. By giving of yourself, you are modeling the way to effective leadership. Further, you may learn as much as you teach from the experience.

I think the most important things to remember here, is that skills are not hierarchical in relation to each other. I say this because we've seen a theme emerge that the skill tree grows from Biz.Dev. -> Sales -> Leadership; and we often forget that they are entirely separate skills, that shouldn't be compared or thought of a progression from each other. Being a master of any of those skills is extremely valuable; and you should be confident and comfortable with having a lane you know better than the rest. All this to say; when evaluating your skills, don't think you need to know how to be a closer and a leader before you can share you knowledge and experience in Biz.Dev. Once you pick a lane, brand yourself to it.

See if you can identify any gaps that your skillset could augment naturally, this could be a great way to find a focus area. Once you have a focus area and a message, invest in those local relationships. They will help you get closer to your customers and if you can augment their services, you're set up for a great referral relationship. Use this niche to engineer your customer profile, and use that to start your business development.

If you say you are an expert in something, but I do a Google Search and I can’t find anything relating to your specialty (podcast, articles, posts, books, etc), I might question your credibility. Mentors, by definition are people who have walked the path and experienced what someone might experience. So, in order to mentor someone, we should have already walked the path that day want to go on. So if we want to be a sales mentor we should have been a good sales executive ourselves. We should understand the nitty-gritty and the practical challenges that the sales executive faces on a day-to-day basis. We should be able to provide practical tips and tricks for the sales executives that we mentor to overcome The challenges that they face. In short, before we can become sales mentors we need to be successful sales executives.
