1 Identify the purpose

The first step is to identify the purpose of your clients' learning goals. What are they trying to achieve by learning something new or improving their existing skills? Is it to enhance their performance, increase their satisfaction, prepare for a career change, or pursue a personal interest? Knowing the purpose of your clients' learning goals will help you align them with their broader career aspirations and values.

I agree that the purpose or “why” needs to be identified first but it also must be a real purpose. Background, current education, culture, and family play an important role in many decisions, and sometimes we decide based on what my boss or parents suggested as the “best for me”. And most of the time we do not realise that the decision, that is so clear to us, has been decided by someone else.

In order to identify the purpose, my first question is important. What is your experience with self awareness? It may be therapy or just self reflecting after the last job or relationship. This will tell you plenty about what you are ready to do professionally. I have a wholistic view of work and that it should be balanced. You will enjoy your career when it is a good fit for your mindset & lifestyle.

2 Explore the options

The next step is to explore the options available for your clients to achieve their learning goals. What are the sources, methods, and resources that they can use to acquire the knowledge and skills they need? For example, they can enroll in formal courses, seek mentoring or coaching, join online communities, read books or articles, watch videos or podcasts, or participate in projects or activities. You can help your clients research and evaluate the options based on their relevance, quality, accessibility, affordability, and flexibility.

We are so lucky that a lot of knowledge is available and accessible with very little effort. But the many options and sources could become overwhelming. I would start asking the client what they enjoy most, and in which environment they learn best. Once that is identified we need to look if we can access, afford, and incorporate this learning in our daily routine. A holistic approach is needed here as we may have the best intention in the world to achieve this goal but needs to fit into our life and commitments.

3 Set the criteria

The third step is to set the criteria for your clients' learning goals. How will your clients know if they have achieved their learning goals or made progress towards them? What are the indicators, standards, and measures that they can use to assess their learning outcomes? For example, they can use tests, quizzes, assignments, feedback, certificates, portfolios, or self-reflection. You can help your clients define and document the criteria for their learning goals and track their performance and improvement.

Assessing progress is key to learning. A good way to start thinking about it would be to ask the client the following questions: at the end of your training what does all this new knowledge look like? How does it feel? How confident are you in the new skill? Once we have visualised the outcome that way we can start to build a plan in place, to achieve mini-goals and check that we are going in the right direction.

4 Plan the actions

The fourth step is to plan the actions for your clients' learning goals. How will your clients implement their learning plan and overcome any potential challenges or barriers? What are the steps, strategies, and tools that they can use to facilitate their learning process and ensure their motivation and commitment? For example, they can use calendars, reminders, checklists, rewards, support groups, or mentors. You can help your clients create and follow a realistic and flexible action plan and adjust it as needed.

Exploring obstacles or challenges may be a good way to start. Some of them may be out of our control and it is important to identify them and learn how to let them go. Also, obstacles we create ourselves are also common and Impostor Syndrome may play a part here. A great question to ask a client is: how would you get on your way? Having the awareness that things may come up and slow or challenge our learning is the first step to plan for them

5 Review the results

The final step is to review the results of your clients' learning goals. How did your clients perform and what did they learn from their learning experience? What are the benefits, challenges, and lessons learned from their learning journey? How can they apply, transfer, or share their learning to their current or future career situations? You can help your clients review and celebrate their learning achievements and identify any gaps or areas for further improvement.

It is not just the learning that we are assessing here, there are other dimensions we may have achieved. Areas that can be explored would be: 1-How have they grown as a person or as a professional? 2-What did they learn in the process and what would they change? 3-How does it feel? Was this the right decision?
