What are some ways to use technical drawing to experiment with different design variations in fashion?

Flat sketch should be the reflection of lay flat garment. if your flat sketch is 2D or 3D. Then it is hard to visualise the pattern, also volume or flare in the garment. In the industry most of our technical pattern maker is not from fashion college. So, the difference between 2D & 3D specs they don't visualise its a 3D body or 100% Flat . Mistake happens at armhole area. As they don't see much curve in the sketch. this happens due to 2D & 3D. For designer it is easier to make flats by keeping body underneath. Copy a design is easy. but to visualise a flat look of the garment is a hard task for designer to visualise a lay flat look. On top of that if they have to write specs and volume, then they will not able to write the detail specs.

Technical design provides more flexibility in making changes - such as altering shapes, colors, proportions and details with a simple click or copy and paste. But one thing I've found helpful is to first illustrate by hand all design ideas. Skipping this process and jumping right to the CAD technical specs often feels like it forces the design to fit into a 'bucket' too early into the design process. This process lacks personality. You don't need to show "posture" on a technical drawing as the "target audience" is the pattern maker who will draft a pattern based on measurements and design details and sample makers who will follow construction details

To begin a technical drawing start by laying your garment flat then drawing a picture of your garment. Take a tape measurer and measure the CF (center front length), sleeve length, shoulder length, chest (garment width) and any other important measurement you might see. Turn the actual garment and draw the back of the garment and do the same thing. Measure the CB (center back), sleeve length, shoulder length etc. Drawings will be about a page in size but record actual garment measurements .

If your company uses a "Block Library", remember to indicate which fit the pattern maker should use as a starting point (eg. Slim Fit, Regular Fit, Relaxed Fit etc). Alternatively, if there is a design from a previous season that fits in a similar way to your target, you should indicate the style code on your drawing

A technical drawing is also known as a 'flat' and that's literally what it should look like, a drawing of the garment laid out flat. It would typically be the front and back view. If the style had a detail that was not clearly visible in these sketches- a centre sleeve seam for example, you could include an additional view. The drawing needs to be accurate, so proportions would be correct and not stylized in anyway. A good place to start is with the appropriate body outline which can then be traced over. Ensure all the details of the garment are shown in the correct places. Personally I enjoy creating a technical drawing early in the design process as it helps me think through the garment construction and evaluate problems.

One of the easiest way to start a technical drawings are to trace existing templates and figure croquis that you can find on the internet. It’ll take a lot of practices to achieve a clean design and perhaps your own technical drawing style.

Technical Flats don't need shading or any details that communicate movement as that is irrelevant to the pattern maker and sample makers who will be using the technical drawing to complete the first prototype

Technical drawings are flats of the whole garment, with front & back views & drawings of details showing special construction & design details. They’re drawn as if the garment is laying flat on a table to show shape, proportion & measurements overlays. The collection of flats form “tech packs”. Pull outs of trim details, special seaming & stitching, & construction indicate additional pages with separate detail drawings & any measurements needed, similar to insets on a map. Tech packs include a detailed spec sheet for fabric, measurements of key points for length, width, & detail placement. Print, logo, & embroidery layouts are included. Flats are precise, don’t overlay croquis, & can be done by hand, CAD, or programs like Illustrator.

To begin drawing the basic shape it can be helpful to have the outline of the body it's going to fit available to sketch over. Then your proportions will be accurate- the sleeve length and body length if it's a top, the chest and hem width, how the neck sits on the body. When working in Illustrator or any other program, place the body (sometimes called a croquis) as the base layer and lock it. Then start a new layer for your drawing. Layers are extremely useful when creating technical drawings, create one for the different aspects of your flat for example one for the pattern, one for stitching, another for accessories. It makes editing easier especially if you have multiple options of the same style that need minor adjustments.

In my experience, you can start by taking a 2D picture of the garment from a straight front view and study the shapes and details on the garment before you start. Then draw the shapes on top of a template or croquis.

Use various stroke size pen range from 0.25mm to 1mm to achieve variation of lines which will reflect the lines and silhouette and details of the garment.

Working in Illustrator, once you have your basic shape drawn ensure that you have that layer locked and labelled. Always name your layers so it's easy to go in and edit the correct layer later. Begin a new layer to add those details and features of your garment. Be consistent in your use of line type and width. You'll probably have used a heavier line for the garment outline and use a lighter one for the internal details. In knitwear for example you would want the ribbing to be the same depth at cuff and hem and the same layout (1x1 or 2x2) on all the trims- unless there is a design reason for it to be different. You can create accessories such as zip pulls or buttons and save them in a library for easy use across your work.

With the advent of digital rendering tools such as CAD and Vectors, you can experiment with various shapes, curves, to edit and/or alter with 2D or 3D dimension design, replicate elements and create variations. I utilize the layering tools to experiment if a certain custom pattern fits the vector layers above the croquis outline, you can simply adjust the opacity of the design or pattern layer, lock the croquis outline layer, then once the pattern is in place slowly cutout the excess by utliIng the eraser or rasterize tools, you can also duplicate the original pattern layer and lock the same for reuse the same element in another part of the design.

For example, you can erase and redraw the neckline or sleeve length of your garment. Additionally, you can copy and paste the collar or pocket of your garment. This is where digitalization of technical drawing brings great benefits, you can easily edit a part of the design without having to start the whole sketch again- for example changing the sleeve length or pocket placements. If using Illustrator it makes the process smoother to have named your layers accurately and ensure you group the elements of your drawing together in a way that makes for easy editing later.

For presentation of technical drawing varies from designers to brands. Usually this document should have a flat drawing of your garment construction showing seams, details and other elements. But before showing this, a page having details like * brand name,collection name/season *a brief description of your garment *fabrication * Button details and other material detail like thread color and pins *Size of your stitches * Usage of fabric While displaying two images Drawing 1 with fabric and overall look in flat drawing Drawing 2 outline of that garment with stitches and other sewing display. Using illustrator or any other software to draw the flat drawing is ideally used. For mass production a hard copy and pdf prefered

To identify this drawing later: details like your brand name, description of your garment, collection it belongs to, fabric list, and other ornaments like buttons, zipper, thread (colors and sizing) etc. should be pinned/scan photographs added to allow for better visual imagery.

As a designer its important to have basic hand drawn skills to quickly convert the idea to a sketch. In my experience what I do is I collate the ideas into paper for each of the ranges and once its finalized convert them in to CADS using adobe illustrator. Agreed that need to maintain a good key silhouette library , so that it not only saves time but also carries out your design identity through out. Maintaining a brush library , swatches and colours is also important to maintain the consistency of your technical drawings. Make sure you always use right line thickness, colours and brushes for a perfect cad for the target product category (women's casual , intimates , active or men's) in illustrator.

Get good in sketching, CAD, and pattern making to truly master the craft - it is also helpful if you know how to sew to make alterations - majority of your sewing though will be done by a team of regular tailors you hire though if you're planning to go big-scale in this industry.
