This is particularly important if you want to switch the focus on your practice, or if you don't have as much hands-on experience that the position requires. For example, let's say that you're a securities litigator and you want to switch into corporate transactions. If you take a number of CLEs or PLIs that are geared for corporate securities attorneys, you are not only demonstrating that you are doing everything that you can to make this transitions seamless as possible, but also, that you spending your "free time" learning new skills.

The more dots that you can connect on the resume, the easier it is for a prospective employer to understand what your foundational skills are. Having separate headings on your resume makes it easier for you to highlight your skills and commendations. It's also useful to have subsections within each entry. For example, if you serve on the Recruiting Committee at your law firm or company, it can be helpful to have a Leadership subsection after you describe your skills and responsibilities.
