I think that storytelling and sharing personal experiences can be very powerful. At the beginning of a session on "Best Practices for Managing Managers," I told a brief story about how difficult that pivot had been for me. It got the group engaged and also role-modeled vulnerability. I have also experimented with sharing my vision for my business at the beginning of a session. It seems to resonate when I say that if they don't find value in the course, I have failed them. Finally, I generally use a discussion question at the beginning as a warm-up. Tell us about the most impactful feedback you've received and what the feedback-giver did that made it impactful. This gets people interested right away and sets a tone for participation.

I had a trainer that worked for me years ago and he began every day's session with what I would describe as a "dad joke." The jokes were usually kind of corny and wouldn't ordinarily get a huge laugh but this trainer delivered them with this deadpan expression and such earnestness, that the entire room would laugh. It endeared him to them very quickly.

There is no one best way to facilitate. You must adapt your message to the participants in the room while bringing energy each and every time. Participants appreciate this and you will resonate with them if you know what to change and how to adapt.

If you've never been in front of a large group before, try to get a dry run in a large room with someone shooting you on video from the back row. It's amazing how your body language, facial expressions, and voice inflections go from powerful - when you're being watched from the front row - to almost non-existent in the back row! In order to make the points as strongly back there, you may need to either spend time walking to, and working the back of the room, or over-express yourself from the front.
