What are some ways to effectively expand your film production network?

I'd say the 'magic triangle' of this question comes down to 3 sides; comprised of the following : 1: The Arts Organizations and Film Societies / Clubs : These organizations are available (in some form or another) almost everywhere...look up your local one, and join. 2: The Student Sets : Volunteering on Student Films can be a fast way to energize (or re-energize) contacts and connections in an immediate way. 3: Volunteering / Attending Film Festivals and Industry Events, and Specialized Events : Find a local or nearby film festival and/or look into local industry events where there are speakers; or go for the big swing(s) and try to attend industry events like #Sundance, #SXSW, or specialty events like #CinemaCon.

I found great success in, finding someone who was steps ahead of me, connecting with them and asking them if I could shadow them on shoots and be a P.A for free. The lessons that I learned throughout this period gave me the courage to do the business on my own with my new knowledge. If you know who you would love to become, you'll cut straight through the noise and find the person you'd love to do free work for a short period of time. Regarding this space, we are all doing our best to maximize our time.

I attended a couple of film festivals in 2023 and they helped me connect with professionals in the film industry. I have established genuine relationships with filmmakers who I still keep in touch with and I get to work on some of their film projects. That's the power of attending film festivals and making lasting connections with industry professionals. I advise every filmmaker looking to expand their network to participate in such events.

A very nice and personal way to connect with other professionals in the video production industry is to search for people whose content you really like, e.g. on Instagram, connect with them and schedule a quick video call to chat. This may sound very simple, but actively starting a conversation will accelerate the expansion of your network compared to just joining a network.

Partnering with other filmmakers, writers, and professionals on collaborative projects not only enhances your skills but also broadens your network. Seek out opportunities for joint ventures, co-productions, or collaborations to build lasting connections within the film industry.

Get on as many sets as possible to begin with, stay connected with people that you meet. Try not to be self indulgent, and ask about upcoming projects that people have before talking about your own. Be helpful when possible. Make sure that your portfolio and socials are up to date, illustrating your best work, people will check these out after the fact and suddenly take you more seriously. Be an organizer; if you have the time and resources, connect people and try to bring folks together. When it makes sense, don’t be afraid to shoot your shot! Let rejection slide off your back
