What are some ways to demonstrate interest in a company during an interview?

Researching a company is part 1, applying the knowledge gained is part 2. Most people stop at part 1. For part 2, build your research into your questions. This really impresses companies when you can ask role related questions based on your knowledge and understanding of the company. Ex) I noticed recently your team has a lot of jobs posted in Calgary, AB but I don't see an office listed there on your website. Is this strategy based on the talent available in the market or future expansion plans?

Know what the product lines are. Find out who the customers are. Look at financials if available. Ask about all of these things and projections by your hiring manager. Ask about an industry trend or two and how they impact or are expected to impact the company. Mention news stories in this realm if you find them. Researching a company is good. Showing your work via an informed conversation about it is 10X better.

One thing I found helpful in both looking for jobs and those looking to work for me is indicating what you have in your experience that is unique that may help the company in new ways. Good interviewers know about the company but may also have some inside information of a new project that your skills may help move the new project forward.

Visit their website and google the company in the news to learn what is happening in their organization. This will provide you with information that can help you formulate questions that show you are interested in the company and how you can contribute

Even though having skills and experiences align with the job description in a similar industry, the challenge is always to impress the interviewer which is difficult while you are trying to land your first job because of fear of rejection.

I have found that researching the wider industry context in order to ask questions around how the organisation could be affected by and is developing responses to future changes and challenges can be effective in demonstrating interest, awareness and insight. These could be changes in legislation and / or regulation, supply chain challenges, sustainability issues etc. As an interviewer I would want to understand what the candidates ideas and perspectives are also.

Build a list of questions to ask about the organization. This will demonstrate that you have done your research and show your sincere interest. Keep your questions focused on the role and company, not about what it is in it for you.

If I can recommend one way to ace an interview, ask a philosophical question to your interviewer. Provide them an opportunity to interview for you. If the interviewer is going to be your direct superior, ask them a question about their philosophy on leadership, their philosophy on work/life balance. Give them the space to let their personality shine. This will not only ingratiate them to you, but it will give you an opportunity to decide if the answer is sufficient for your needs.

Sending a short thank you note by email shows your interest and sincerity and could be the deciding factor in you being the selected candidate. The thank you should be focused on your appreciation for the opportunity to present yourself and not a recap of why you are a great candidate.

A simple LinkedIn follow up message can do this job. It is important to be genuine and show your engagement not only to the company but to the job and people you just met with. People will make the decisions as to who goes to the next round - so undoubtedly the above must follow a connected interview, where you were genuine in showing your interests and what you can bring to the table.

The job seeker time frame and the company time frame are two different worlds. Understand that organizations have a lot going on and shifting priorities. Follow up weekly to show your demonstrated interest.

Ensure you’ve established/agreed upon next steps and timeframes for those. Most people will be aware of candidate experience and respectful of your time, so the rule should be that if you do follow up in the absence of any updates, you’ll get a proper response clarifying.
