So often, we get down to business but we don't allow time for people to chat or decompress from other, more stressful meetings. I always believe your core team should have your back, as you should theirs. Those core team meetings should be safe areas for you all to be able to discuss challenges or roadblocks, either in the workplace or even at home.

When employers are supportive and empathetic, it helps employees to feel like they are not just a task or there to achieve KPIs. They are human and they spend time, effort and energy to show up everyday at work. What helps is to practice empathetic listening: - Put aside distractions - Focus on what they are saying, and in particular, the emotions they are sharing. This could mean looking at their body language, facial expression etc - Ask questions to clarify (if needed) - Assure them of their strengths and comptence. When you listen well, it helps them feel heard, valued and respected!

I lead an all-remote team - and we're blessed to have one of the most happy, healthy and productive cultures I've seen. It starts with creating psychological safety - all voices are heard without judgement. By creating moments within work that aren't about work - our team chat is filled with pets, children, vacations as much as it is with work. And creating moments where team members can gain personal insights about one another without feeling too exposed. Try "gamifying" their jobs - if your job had a theme song what would it be? Show a picture of what people think your job looks like compared to what it actually looks like. The conversation that sparks from these types of exercises goes deeper and further than "2 truths and a lie".
