What are some ways to build rapport with a shy or introverted coachee?

getting to build a rapport with an introvert simply through few steps - providing a psychological safety ( not acting judgmental and creating a safe space) - normalising his/her behaviour : there is not bad or good behaviour , there is a behaviour that serves the client and it's system and there is another behaviour that doesn't serve the coachee and it's community - Active listening is a magical tool that help any introvert or shy to speak up , allowing silent moments and asking " what else" - last setting grounds or contracting though being explicit what you expect and asking the other part what they expect and recontracting when needed. building the coachee's awareness about what coaching is ( challenge and support )

In coaching introverted or shy coachees, my approach centers around respecting their preferences. It's like entering someone's quiet space with a sense of reverence. As Susan Cain, author of "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking," wisely notes, "There's zero correlation between being the best talker and having the best ideas." I acknowledge and honor their need for a more reserved environment, creating a safe space for them to express themselves at their own pace. This helps me create a safe space for my coachee.

To build rapport with a shy or introverted coachee, create a comfortable environment and initiate conversations with open-ended questions. Give them time to respond, listening actively and empathetically. Respect their need for space and avoid overwhelming them. Share personal stories to establish common ground and trust. Acknowledge their strengths, and gradually increase interaction as they become more comfortable, always respecting their pace and personal boundaries.

Sometimes, you need to just shut your mouth as the coach. An introverted/shy coachee may just be used to other people taking over the conversation. Show him/her this situation is different. Ask a question, then be quiet. Give them the space and time to provide an answer. Over time, they will understand you actually want to hear from them.

It’s my perspective that warmth, non-judgement and deep care go a long way. Clients sense that it’s safe. Once we create a safe space by validating their feelings, micro-self-disclosing as a skill, listening with our hearts…and coaching the whole, amazing person in front of us instead of the topic, the client will begin to open. It takes time and it’s breathtaking when it happens.

To create safety for your coachee, be vulnerable. You can share something that is personal in order for your coachee to see how this relationship should operate. However, don't abdicate your role as coach. Don't let the coachee start coaching you in this moment; keep the focus on him/her.

Utilizing metaphors, analogies, and quotes helps them articulate complex emotions more comfortably. Gently encouraging them to step out of their comfort zone, while respecting their boundaries, can further aid in developing their self-expression skills, ensuring they feel supported and understood throughout this process.

In coaching a highly introverted coachee, I found success by adapting to his communication preferences. Initially, he was reserved, offering minimal verbal feedback. Recognizing this, I shifted to written communication methods like email and journaling, which allowed him to express himself more comfortably. Over time, his engagement during sessions increased, culminating in him sharing a personal success via email. This achievement was celebrated in a subsequent session, significantly boosting his confidence.

When you show or display your vulnerability by sharing your failures and fears that the coachee might have experienced or is currently going through and how you overcame them, this will empower the coachee to feel comfortable coming out of their shell to find solutions to overcome their challenge and reason for seeking coaching.

One of the best ways to enter into their world is by discussing around common hobbies and likings. It will help in dissolving invisible boundaries. Little bit of probing as to why, what, when and how do they find time to pursue their hobbies can be used as an aid / tool for deeper discussions. Gradually the tilt or shift can be made towards the coaching agenda.

Fortunately, I have worked with many CXO Clients who are both extremely successful as well as introverted. And my experience has taught me to ask more and speak leas…. And this has helped me to connect well with my clients….

Give space, be comfortable with silence, be comfortable with possible restrained responses to questions. Shy clients may not be immediately very expansive.

When you make them believe in themselves by assuring them of the desire to have them contribute ideas in seeking solutions, they loosen up and speak more . In summery : 1. Value them and show they are truly valued 2. seek their opinions and assure them that there are no repercussions for wrong ideas . 3. Recognise them for every positive contribution . 4. Acknowledge theri efforts even if they may not be positive at that moment 5. Constantly remind them how valued they are in the organisation . 6 While listening to them ,show it through body language and relevant gestures .
