Proximity is the relative distance and position of elements in relation to each other. Proximity creates contrast, emphasis, and relationships among your elements. It also helps the reader identify the groups, categories, and functions of your content. Poor proximity can make your layout look crowded, confusing, and irrelevant.
Consistency is helpful in general to guide a viewer so they understand the more important aspects of information being presented to them. There are several font families that allow you to add interest with some variation in style, but every project is different regarding the nature of the design, its intended audience and message. If you’re a beginner, the best advice I have is to focus more on visual hierarchy and avoid the temptation to mix 5 font families. Choose two (maximum) that compliment each other, and you’ll have options within those to create a visual flow that feels cohesive and is easy to understand.
Think of proximity as the whisperer in your flyer design. By placing related elements close together, you create a silent conversation for viewers. Text near an image becomes connected. Spaced-out elements feel isolated. Use this power strategically! Group similar items for clarity, and let white space highlight important content. Proximity isn't just about distance, it's about creating a clear and visually engaging conversation in your flyer.
One of the most useful tools for achieving alignment and proximity is a grid system. A grid is a framework of horizontal and vertical lines that divide your layout into columns, rows, and margins. A grid helps you align and space your elements consistently and proportionally. You can use a grid to create different layouts for different purposes, such as web pages, magazines, posters, etc.
Guides are another helpful tool for alignment and proximity. Guides are non-printing lines that you can place on your layout to mark specific positions, boundaries, or measurements. You can use guides to snap your elements to a precise location, to align them with other elements, or to create custom grids.

Another useful tool in Photoshop is the Smart Guides feature. This feature automatically shows you when your elements are aligned with each other or with the grid. You can also use the Rulers and Snap options to measure and place your elements accurately.
My favorite hack is making a shortcut for center vertically + horizontally in Adobe Illustrator. Make an action and assign it to a keyboard shortcut, and when recording the action, just grab an object and hit align to artboard vertically, and then hit align to artboard horizontally. Now to center anything perfectly, I just hit Shift + F5. Major time saver!
Proximity tools are less common than alignment tools, but they can still help you group and space your elements effectively. For example, in Adobe Illustrator, you can use the Pathfinder panel to combine, subtract, intersect, or divide multiple shapes into new shapes. This can help you create complex or abstract forms that have a strong visual connection.

The only tool more vital to learn in Illustrator is the pen tool. Once you can reasonably draw something with that, combined with the pathfinder options, as well as the ability to select and align individual points, possibilities are endless.
Alignment and proximity are not strict regulations, but rather guidelines that can help you improve your layout design. Other factors, such as contrast, balance, harmony, and white space, should also be taken into account when creating a layout. To apply alignment and proximity principles effectively, use alignment to create order and connection while varying it to create interest and contrast. Utilize proximity to form groups and relationships, but also separate them with enough white space for clarity and hierarchy. Experiment with different grid systems and layouts to determine the best fit for your purpose and audience. Additionally, use alignment and proximity tools for precision and efficiency, but also trust your eye and intuition to fine-tune the layout.
When in doubt? Zoom out. All art is subjective. When you’re trying to convey a message with design, make sure the intended project is clearly defined so you know where to place the focus, and simplify as much as possible.
