Organizing and backing footage up throughout the production is one of the main responsibilities of a video content creator. From the moment the card is taken out of the camera to when the final file is delivered to client, this workflow should be a planned, organized and repeated process. Once that structure is created, every project should be organized the same way. Choose from one of the many softwares available that let you preview, backup, ingest and convert footage. A digital imaging technican can be on set on the shoot for ingesting & organizing data. The most common mistake I see new filmmakers make is not buying fast enough or large enough drives, then the backup takes longer than they think and is not completed on set.

To follow up on Laura's thoughts. I build time into the daily shoot schedule for review and backup of content. If shooting motion and print, it's two different workflows. Hardrives are inexpensive.

Honestly, if everything else fails, use what you can. Scratch your whole idea. Start from new. It has happened to me many times where I had a vision in my head, but when it came down to the raw files, it couldn't work. Therefore, I had to start from fresh to create a way to use what I had available.

Backup twice, backup immediately. My advice would be to backup using an offline device - it could be an old laptop with internet disabled - and a connected hard drive. This avoids many cyber security risks. Secondly backup to the cloud for resiliency, redundancy and flexibility. Thirdly, capture to your working edit suite. If possible have both the offline and cloud backup carried out by different people to avoid human error, such as missing cards or capture folders.

I would not under any circumstances run a software update during a project. This sounds like common sense but I still see it happen and cause all manner of headaches. If you're using the Adobe Creative Cloud this would require having the auto-update disabled.
