What are some strategies for creating PBL projects that support diverse student interests?

Crafting a potent PBL project requires a driving question that acts as a beacon for diverse student interests. A broad yet relevant inquiry stimulates curiosity and invites varied perspectives. For instance, a question like "How can technology revolutionize urban living?" encompasses domains ranging from sustainability to accessibility, catering to students drawn to engineering marvels, environmental activism, urban planning, or social justice advocacy. Such a question not only embraces the diversity of student passions but also fosters interdisciplinary exploration, ensuring engagement and meaningful learning experiences for all.

Driving questions should not only be broad in their reach but specific in what they are searching for from students. When I wrote a PBL unit about body systems for my middle school students, the driving question that we used was: How can our knowledge about the interconnectedness of body systems help us address health disparities in our community by creating an education workshop for middle school students in our community that highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle? By connecting content with real-life, relevant issues and inviting students to move into action, we move them from being "consumers" to being agents of change.

Incorporating multiple entry points and pathways in PBL projects caters to diverse student interests. Offering various ways to engage, from storytelling to interactive simulations, ensures accessibility for all learners. Similarly, diverse pathways like research, experiments, or artistic expression accommodate different learning styles. This approach not only differentiates instruction but also empowers students to follow their passions, fostering deeper engagement and meaningful learning experiences in the process.

Incorporating student voice and choice goes beyond letting them choose their own format, designing the driving question or assessment format/rubric. I believe it empowers students to express their opinions in a safe environment, knowing they can contribute to the world even today.

PBL projects work best when they're truly created from the ground up by learners. That takes time and guidance. Giving students the space to wonder and stumble and dig around perhaps takes the most time — and it should. Ideas are the trickiest thing to come up with, but teaching kids how to approach idea generation is a powerful lesson it itself, but it's often rushed through to get to the project itself. Give room, space, and support to student ideas and voice. There's so much richness there.

One way that I model effective and healthy feedback in my classroom is by using three guiding points. First, students will share the positive or praises they have for the specific we are evaluating. Let's say we are evaluating a presentation. We phrase it "I like..." and then they will, in detail share what they liked about the presentation. No suggestions, no criticism, only 'I like.' Then we move to the second section, where we say, "I wonder." In this section, we offer our suggestions in the form of a question: "I wonder what would happen if you had tried xyz in your presentation." The third section is 'I take away.' In this section, students share what they take away from the presentation.

Promoting peer collaboration and feedback in PBL nurtures a rich learning ecosystem. Through interaction, students exchange diverse perspectives, refining their understanding and skills. This process cultivates empathy and fosters respect for diverse interests and approaches. Educators play a pivotal role by structuring collaborative activities, fostering inclusivity, and modeling constructive feedback. By harnessing the power of peer interaction, PBL projects become dynamic arenas where students co-create knowledge, enriching their learning journey and embracing the richness of diversity.

Incorporating authentic audiences and experts elevates PBL projects by grounding them in real-world relevance. Engaging with professionals and relevant communities not only provides invaluable insights but also validates students' work. Such connections offer diverse avenues for students to explore their interests and contribute meaningfully. Educators can facilitate these interactions through guest speakers, field trips, interviews, or exhibitions, enriching students' learning experiences and fostering a deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom.

Through self-assessment, journaling, or portfolio creation, students gain insights into their progress and contributions. They recognize the multifaceted nature of their skills and interests in relation to the project's real-world context.
