When it comes to video editing, there are a few key principles that I always keep in mind. Firstly, timing is everything—just like adding the perfect sprinkle of salt to a dish, precise cuts and transitions can enhance the flow and impact of your video. Secondly, pacing is crucial—think of it as finding the perfect rhythm for your video, like a catchy beat that keeps the audience grooving. Lastly, don't forget the power of storytelling—just like a good joke, a well-crafted narrative can captivate and leave a lasting impression. Not just choosing the right shots, but choosing WHEN to use those shots. A shot is only as good as the timing. If you are struggling with an edit, mess around with the length of shots. I learned that some of the best movies are timed well. Follow the feeling, and go with your gut. Editing = timing + placement.

In my experience maintaining pace and flow of the scene you are editing is the important thing. Be patient to watch all the footages completely and choose the correct cut point “an edit can spoil the story too “ so it’s very important to follow the pace and add basic editing techniques like “ L & J cuts” it’ll help to keep the edit smooth from one clip to another. Don't get precious about footage. Some of your favourite or greatest shots will end up on the cutting room floor and that's okay. Letting go of a great shot because it doesn't aid the narrative or fit the pacing will always be the right decision.

The 180-degree rule can be a little tricky to grasp through just writing. Take a look at some YouTube videos from people such as Film Riot who will help with a visualise guide on how it works. Once you understand it's purpose, then take a look at creatively breaking it to distract or disorientate your audience!

Sometimes the best transition is none. Review your favourite movies, you'll often find they use minimal to no transitions other than a hard cut. Don't let the abundance of crazy social media content cloud your vision of what a good edit should look like. Most cuts should be invisible.

Sometime you must kill your darlings. Just because you love a particular shot don't mean it automatically makes the cut. If a particular shot or clip don't add to the story whether it be part of the narrative or as an aid to establishing a scene then it should go. Much like unnecessary dialog in a script, pointless long shots that don't bring value only distract viewers from the story you are trying to tell.

Instead of using an irrelevant, inconsistent, or overdone transition with knowing “the Art of the Cut” just focus on the Match Cuts

This is a rule I try to always implement. When you think you’re done, revisit foley opportunities. Especially if no foley was used/added to the project.

Quick tip: once you have selected your music, place it on your timeline and edit your video clips' length to the rhythm and changes of the song. This can help create fun, engaging pacing.

When editing to music, one of my favorite practices is right after selecting the song, I’ll first tap the M key on certain parts while the music is playing to create markers indicating the parts where I want to use new clips or add transitions.

It’s also important to know WHEN to add each piece of audio—and when NOT to. While you don’t want your video to feel flat and boring, you also don’t want to overpower any emotion you may be trying to convey. Unless you’re making a parody or purposely adding some humor, be careful of how you use sound and music.

Choosing the right music isn't always straightforward. There are various moods for upbeat tracks. And depending on the length of the video,sometimes a nice piece of music becomes repetitive and routine. Find a music that supports the story and creates energy and moments of suspense. And sometimes you need to mix more than 1 piece of music to get it right.

Great audio is key to get your audience connected with the story you are telling. If you are not taking your audio mixing process seriously, you are leaving boatloads of quality on the table. Simple things like cutting to music, compressing/limiting your dialog, and placing well timed sound effects can bring a project to life.

Every detail in video editing matters - make sure you colour grade your footage so that everything looks uniform, review your edits and swap out any transitions/effects if they look out of place on second review, and make sure everything is synced to the beat of your chosen soundtrack - it is just more aesthetically pleasing. Also as said earlier, make sure you are telling a story - no matter how long/short a video is, it’s possible to convey a narrative that will grip the viewer.

Audio sets the stage - Editing without sound is a total destruction in maximizing temperament control in any moving image sequence.

Professional editing software like Davinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, and Avid Media Composer will give you notifications on the timeline if your audio/video loses sync. However, the best way to avoid it from happening is to use three-point editing as opposed to "drag and drop" editing. Look it up, and you'll save time editing and reduce the chances of gaps or sync issues.

My biggest pet peeve is when editors cut on a blink that happens right at the cut point… Once you notice this it cant be unseen. Unfortunately it happens far too often and is very amateur. You need, at the minimum, 4 frames after a blink before you can edit smoothly between shots.

As an editor, you maximise your talent having as much information about the objectives of the piece and how it will be used. Do not be afraid to highlight moments you are unsure about, always noting why you've made certain decisions. When it comes to an edit, it's useful to have an individual who sits between the stakeholders and the creatives. Look for notes to be communicated as either a single technical note or a larger conceptual note, and develop the skill to differentiate between the two. Having an individual to aid this process is invaluable, but developing the skill to be become that individual is possible too.

Every shot not only tells a story but it also contains a graphic shape or elements of design and color. It is essential when creating a montage to pay close attention to the graphic movement between each edit. Movement and shape must keep the eye engaged so it doesn’t float around the frame. Eb and flow is as important as the sound that encapsulates the visual. It is always a good idea to see the shape of each out going frame compared to the incoming. Editing is never random but a highly controlled movement.
