2 Software-defined networking

Software-defined networking (SDN) is a paradigm that decouples the network control plane from the data plane, and centralizes the network intelligence and management in a software controller. SDN allows you to abstract, program, and automate the network configuration and behavior, and to dynamically adapt it to changing network conditions and demands. SDN can improve the network efficiency, performance, reliability, and security, and enable new network capabilities, such as network slicing, service chaining, or network function virtualization.

The SDN controller manages network operations through northbound and southbound APIs in the Software-defined networking (SDN) context. It is implemented as a distributed system to ensure performance, scalability, fault tolerance, and robustness. For instance, Amazon VPC uses Network State Management, AWS Management Console, and SDKs as Northbound APIs in cloud computing. AWS Networking Services act as Southbound APIs, communicating with the AWS network infrastructure. AWS's global infrastructure spans regions and Availability Zones worldwide, capable of handling millions of requests simultaneously, similar to the SDN Controller's network-wide control.

3 Edge computing

Edge computing is a distributed computing model that brings the computation and storage closer to the data sources and users at the edge of the network. Edge computing can reduce the latency, bandwidth, and cost of data transmission, and enhance the performance, quality, and security of data processing and delivery. Edge computing can also enable new network applications and services that require real-time, interactive, or context-aware capabilities, such as IoT, AR/VR, or smart cities.

Network automation becomes more and more important in network management and operation. Although coding skills add significant value to it, network automation doesn’t necessarily equal 100% coding. There are many great tools and features developed by different network vendors and third party companies. Some of the functions achieved by coding are also being built into GUI-based tools and applications. While we are looking forward to better and more customizable GUI-based automation tools, learning some coding basics is still beneficial to network operations.

Agree. Network automation has been a major trend and focus area since last 4-5 years approx. With NFV including MANO and Telco networks moving to NFV/cloud architecture Automation has become part of it. Network automation provides agility and helps reduce time to deploy/implement any aspect of network- infra/network functions/application/configuration/policies etc. Also , Building of automation is technically one time effort for each use case/solution on a given orchestrations product. Once ready it enables repeatability and deployment at scale at fast pace with minimal technical knowledge of the implementation engineer (once network planning is complete). This helps better manage technical resources utilisation which is very crucial.

Network security is the practice of protecting the network infrastructure, devices, data, and applications from unauthorized access, misuse, or attack. Network security is becoming more challenging and critical as the network environment becomes more complex, dynamic, and heterogeneous, and as the network threats become more sophisticated, frequent, and diverse. Network security requires a holistic and proactive approach that integrates multiple layers, tools, and strategies, such as encryption, authentication, firewalls, antivirus, intrusion detection and prevention, anomaly detection and response, or zero trust.
