The real power of ANNs is that they use large amounts of data (examples to learn from), to find relationships between variables, which would be nearly impossible to find otherwise. According to the Universal Approximation Theorem, an ANN with at least 1 hidden layer can approximately model any continuous function that exists in the universe. Computer vision, Speech Recognition and NLP are some examples where ANNs have successfully, using thousands of examples, found relationships and built mathematical formulas that model such relationships, which would have been nearly impossible to model otherwise.

Underfitting & Overfitting: Evaluation metrics such as loss and accuracy are generated for every partition (train, val, test) created from the dataset. A close look at the metrics for all sets is critical to ensuring great performance. Underfitting: When metrics are poor across all partitions, signifying that the model is not sophisticated enough to learn the underlying patterns in the data. I would like to share a project experience here. I had worked on a project related to fault analysis in metro train for predictive maintenance applications. The dataset comprises of 15 million samples with sensor data recorded for 6 months. Machine learning algorithms like SVM, KNN, Decision Tree took a lot of time to train. On the other hand, ANN trained comparatively quick and gave a desirable result (99% accuracy). Hence for complex datasets, ANN can work well.
