Many government agencies are now making a great deal of environmental assessment mapping available free for use via Web mapping portals and services. While some of this information is downloadable as functional GIS files, much of it is not, and can only be utilised through .pdf, .jpg, .tiff, .geotiff or other types of image files, which are essentially screenshots that are difficult for making further applications. Some of the data can also be downloaded as .csv , .xlsx, or similar files. When requesting a GIS file from these government agencies, we are often told that it is not possible because they have formatted and manipulated the data in a certain way that makes it difficult to get back to the base data used to create the webmaps!

Location intelligence is not the same as navigation intelligence. This is a critical understanding for those applying spatial databases/GIS to logistics, public safety, traffic & event management and other associated real world services.

Whenever we talk about GIS then our brain will just start thinking about colour maps, query, analysis, pattern etc. However based on my experience GIS is just a beautiful map untill it connects with business workflow.

It is vital that the Spatial Scientist understands that spatial statistics differ in that they make the assumption that near things tend to be more alike than far things. This is called ‘spatial autocorrelation’, and it forms one of the core pillars of geographic information. Use this to your advantage. Leverage this powerful and profound uniqueness.

The importance of spatial analysis has been addressed, however, a map is not always the final output of the analysis. Zonal statistics are often used to obtain statistics by polygons defined by the GIS analyst that can be then used to see statistical trends in the data.
