I once had a tour of Japan with Japanese jazz musicians who arranged for me to stay with different families in each city with the request that I give a vocal lesson to the lady of the house. For each person I took a specific Standard song that they had been working on and told them to listen to four different artists that I thought had made a contribution to the interpretation of that song and offered them the option to record me singing the song as well. I didn't ask them to choose the artist who is rendition of the song the most identified with And hold in on that specific singers style and phrasing and then record the song with them interpreting it in that style. I was quite flattered when one of the women chose my version to emulate.

As an exercise to expand the creativity of a student I will sometimes ask them to sing in a range that they have not spent very much time exploring during situations where they might be alone driving a car or walking in the forest etc. For a man it might be high falsetto notes and for a woman it might be extremely low tones. This exercise not only enables them to find sounds that they might not have known they had but also strengthens other parts of the register.

Attend physical concerts at various concert halls Here's my thought. The one thing a teacher cannot teach is style. A teacher can provide guidance and excellent reference points to develop stylistic artistry. However, humble beginnings of style where music is concerned comes directly from listening to genres of interest. Attending concerts in concert halls elevates the listening experience because one absorbs multiple stylistic elements that define a particular period/era pertaining to the music in question. And if you have the score with you then even better. Helps to have a seasoned teacher to help point out what to look out for as much as it helpful to absorb on one's own. Happy learning!
