IMO, try to not overcomplicate things. While it might look interesting or tempting to apply the most up-to-date and sophisticated algorithms/technologies, they might not be what you actually need to win the competition. Overcomplicating leads to a lot of time and resource devoted to R&D and extensive debugging, leaving less time for the team to test and train in operating the robot. Always view the competition's winning objectives in the bigger picture, so you can allocate your time and resources more wisely and efficiently. Instead of using sophisticated, hard-to-implement algorithms, most of the time it is better to ensure the reliability and robustness of the software (e.g.: catering to edge cases, robust wireless connection, etc.).
