Profit refers to the financial value you generate for your stakeholders. People refers to the social impact you have on your employees, customers, community, and society. Planet refers to the environmental impact you have on the natural resources, ecosystems, and climate. The TBL framework helps you align your business goals with the broader needs and expectations of your stakeholders and the planet.

The TBL is best used with micro and small business who want to align with the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. By aligning with the SDGs, the micro and small business owners will be able to develop and implement strategic goals that will meet the SDGs. In coaching micro and small business owners, many of them are so focused on profit, that they do not typically have strategic goals that account for people and planet dimensions. When businesses develop goals in these two areas, they naturally see an increase in profits.

2 The Circular Economy

The circular economy is a framework that aims to eliminate waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use, and regenerate natural systems. The circular economy challenges the traditional linear model of production and consumption, where resources are extracted, used, and disposed. Instead, the circular economy promotes a system where resources are reused, repaired, refurbished, remanufactured, or recycled. The circular economy helps you reduce your environmental footprint, save costs, create new revenue streams, and innovate your products and services.

3 The B Impact Assessment

The B Impact Assessment (BIA) is a tool that helps you assess and improve your social and environmental performance. The BIA is a free online platform that evaluates your business across five areas: governance, workers, customers, community, and environment. The BIA provides you with a score, a benchmark, and a roadmap to improve your impact. The BIA also helps you prepare for the certification process of becoming a B Corporation, a global network of businesses that meet the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility.

I was unfamiliar with the BIA. But I can see its utility for businesses and companies who have missions that are related to social and environmental improvement. The assessment appears to provide an easy to understand of where a business is currently, but also provides recommendations for improvement. It might be possible for those recommendations to be incorporated into the strategic plan for the overall business or company. The BIA includes a feature where a company can compare its impact to others who have taken the assessment. I see this feature as being helpful in a business or company making revisions to their value proposition and their competitive advantage.

4 The Business Model Canvas

The business model canvas (BMC) is a tool that helps you design and test your business model. The BMC is a visual template that consists of nine building blocks: value proposition, customer segments, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partnerships, and cost structure. The BMC helps you map out and communicate your value proposition, identify your target customers, define your key activities and resources, and optimize your revenue and cost structure. The BMC also helps you explore different scenarios and assumptions, and validate your business model with experiments and feedback.

The BMC is an amazing tool! I use it with my clients with whom I provide business coaching and management consulting services. I especially love facilitating the process of discussing the client's value proposition, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, and cost structure. These are areas that many business owners, new or seasoned, seem to overlook, but yet they want to see increased revenue. Oftentimes, I explain to business owners and their executive teams that increasing revenue is not going to happen by throwing money at marketing. Increasing our revenues in our businesses should be based on developing and implementing a strategy that helps us leverage the elements of the BMC!

5 The Lean Startup Methodology

The lean startup methodology is a framework that helps you create and grow your business in an uncertain and dynamic environment. The lean startup methodology is based on three principles: build-measure-learn, minimum viable product, and validated learning. Build-measure-learn is a cycle that helps you test your ideas and learn from your customers. Minimum viable product is a version of your product or service that has the minimum features to satisfy your early adopters. Validated learning is a process of collecting and analyzing data to measure your progress and make decisions. The lean startup methodology helps you reduce risks, avoid waste, and increase customer satisfaction.

This is the framework I use myself and would recommend. Because it focuses on learning through validation — whereas other frameworks tend to focus on forecasts, predictions, etc. I use this approach to determine if a path is worth taking. Combine this framework with short iterations (on the order of weeks, not months). At the end of each iteration, ask yourself - what's working? - what's not working? - what needs to change?
