I think ventilation effectiveness, among other IEQ credits in LEEDS, is an important aspect of IEQ, as it can enhance the health, well-being, and productivity of the occupants. I also think the Bullitt Center is a remarkable example of a green building that demonstrates the feasibility and benefits of net-zero energy design. This concern can never be over emphasized in sustainable architecture and environmental quality, if we really care about the environmental hazard we will soon face due to our negligence.

An example I have seen is the Qatar National Library designed by Rem Koolhaas, the Qatar National Library has a diamond-shaped exterior that allows natural light to enter the spacious interior. It also has a large central atrium that provides a visual connection to the surrounding landscape and the city skyline and light sensors that adjust the artificial lighting according to the daylight levels. The Qatar National Library is a stunning example of how daylight and views can enhance the architectural and functional aspects of a building. Daylight and views improve mental health, biophilic design, and LEED credits of a building. They reduce stress, boost mood, lower energy use, and enhance sustainability.

3 Acoustic Performance

A third IEQ credit in LEED is acoustic performance, which aims to enhance the sound quality and reduce the noise levels in the building. Several years ago we created a Division 01 General Requirements section for green cleaning requirements for temporary and final cleaning. It was based upon the LEED EBOM requirements, which at the time did not find their way into LEED new construction requirements. After lots of effort to improve IEQ during construction, we wanted to avoid having janitorial services bring unwanted chemicals into the environment.
