An interior room (like a large closet without windows) can be ideal because the solid walls and other rooms buffer against outside noise. However, you also need to consider noise originating INSIDE the home (like your HVAC, fridge, or even a hallway light that hums). Many of those things can be turned off, but if not, choose a studio away from the noises.

When I first started voice acting, I thought I needed to buy an $8,000 booth to be a professional, but luckily, that wasn't the case. I have a half walk-in closet that is the perfect size for a small desk and chair! I added some acoustic panels to the inside of the closet door and walls and voila! Now you can tell your spouse/parent that the money spent on your clothes isn't a waste! ;)

Think of sound as if it were water. Just like water finds its way through cracks and openings, sound also enters through gaps. For example, if there is a space between your door and the floorboard, sound will enter your room. Even a small space between the electrical outlet or plug box and the drywall can allow sound to enter. Make sure to check for any such gaps and openings to ensure that you have a soundproof room.

As an acoustic consultant and musician, I cannot over-emphasize the importance of sealing the gaps. The difference between a wide open and cracked open door are only less than between a closed and cracked door. Use foam gap sealer tape around the door with a sweep and cushion at the bottom. If you can get acoustic mastic to seal the gaps, do it. Make sure your windows close and seal well, close any ventilation elements. Even consider secondary internal glazing if you're on a busy road.

Another common tactic is to add mass to any windows. This can be with a 2nd window, plexiglass that is sealed in or even a fitted sound panel.

If you want something more long term for a sound buffer. I have created mobile sound walls in more than one studio or live setting to help mitigate and control the room acoustics. One method was to build a light weight frame using 2x4's. I then lined it with insulation and using a staple gun and medium weight fabric. I wrapped the 4x8 frame. You can add some legs or extensions to stabilize the foundation. These are a very flexible and effective sound buffer.

One common mistake I see many recording artists make is using those classic foam, square wall/ceiling pads that you get off Amazon. To say these do nothing is obviously not the case, but if they are your only sound treatment than they are effectively doing just that... Nothing. Thick blankets on your walls, dense pillows in the corners of your room and a nice fluffy rug (or even towels) on your floor are better places to start. Your goal is to absorb as much sound inside your space as possible and while those little squares do create softer surfaces, the sound they dampen is minimal at best when used alone. Also, creating thin air pockets, about 1 inch, in between your sound dampening and your wall is excellent for "trapping" sound.

There is often confusion between Sound Dampening and Sound Proofing. They are related but different. In a nutshell- Dampening will make a room sound better. Proofing stops sound. The only way to stop sound energy is Mass. If possible; framing a simple "room within a room" with sheet rock and insulation and small gap between the 2 walls is the most cost effective means.

In my home studio, I started with budget-friendly options like thick rugs, heavy curtains, and bookshelves filled with books. I also used mass-loaded vinyl (MLV) behind my drywall, which provided excellent sound insulation without a hefty price tag. Layering materials like foam panels and blankets on the walls helped absorb sound. These additions made a significant difference in reducing outside noise and echoes, creating a more controlled recording environment.

Understanding how sound travels is an excellent way to help you improve/build your recording studio! When you think of sound like a physical object that you can see, it helps you imagine where your weak points are in your recording space. Soft materials like books, clothes, blankets, or pillows will allow sound to pass through. Hard materials like metal, wood, or concrete will block the sound, causing it to bounce off. By covering all of your hard surfaces and then placing some soft objects about an inch in front of them, you will not only dampen the sound reflected but also create air gaps to capture the loose sound waves before they bounce back into your microphone! Corners are often the most difficult to treat for these reflections

In addition to soundproofing the space, avoiding external sounds, it’s very important to internally neutralize echoes, which also ends up being noise. The sound captured by the microphone must be dry, direct from our voice or musical instrument, without reflections. It helps to use sound-absorbing material, such as acoustic foam panels and basstraps for the corners. But there are cheaper alternatives for those starting a career. In my case, as a voice-over talent, I recorded my first voice-overs in a closet with the microphone in the middle of the clothes. The fabrics absorbed my voice, preventing it from echoing at the back of the closet, reflecting off the wall behind me, and being picked up by the mic again.

A solid clap can be a great way to test the quality of your recording space. Moving around and clapping in different places while listening for sharp reflections can help you figure out what needs more treatment. It can also help you find the ideal place for your microphone placement. Somewhere where the clap sounds flat, muted or "dead" right after the initial strike could be a good place to put your microphone as it means there are not as many sound waves reflecting back to that location. Tip: Clap about 6-8 inches (the distance from your thumb to the tip of your pinky, a shaka or "hang loose" sign) in front of your nose for the most accurate results. Move around and listen closely to which direction sharp reflections echo back from.

Testing and adjusting your setup is crucial for effective soundproofing. When I finished my initial soundproofing, I recorded several test clips to identify any lingering issues. I noticed some areas still had minor echoes and noise leaks. By moving foam panels and adding extra layers of curtains, I fine-tuned the acoustics. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different materials and placements. Sometimes small adjustments can make a big difference. Regularly testing your setup ensures you maintain the best possible recording quality over time.

Don't forget that your recording space can also sound too closed in and unnaturally "boxy" if the space is small and too tightly insulated. This is just as bad (or at least close!) as the space sounding too big and echo-y. To avoid this, choose a larger space and maybe close off the recording area with a curtain. This is what I do in my home studio, which is actually a big basement storage closet--divide in half with a curtain, not a wall. It still allows for more natural sound flow on the side with the curtain, while 3 sides are treated with acoustic panels and foam.

Don't forget the importance of air when soundproofing your recording studio. Creating air pockets between construction surfaces and the outer surfaces of your studio will help reduce sound vibration transfer. Picture a box within a box- that's what are trying to create. I also used Green Glu sound dampening product in between the drywall and walls, ceiling and floors during construction.

If you're confined to a basic room in your house... - I've found that closets (that are large enough and actually have clothes in them) are great spaces to get a dry vocal take without introducing too much "room" sound. - Using inexpensive building materials such as insulation panels wrapped in an attractive fabric on the walls are great ways to add light acoustic treatment to the space. - Kitchens and bathrooms (or rooms with a lot of hard surfaces) are sometimes great spaces for recording lively drums, vocals etc.

Clothes are an amazing sound dampener. I was "in the closet" for the first couple of years, and just set up my clothes around my mic, leaving enough space to still move freely. Had a respectable -55db.

This article makes the common mistake of confusing sound proofing with sound absorption. Sound proofing is what you do to keep sounds like leaf blowers & kids out of your recordings. Sound absorption is what you do to so you don't sound like you recorded in a tile bathroom. Sound proofing requires lots of mass and isolation and is very expensive. Sound absorption can be achieved economically with common materials like comforters, futon matresses, a walk-in closet full of clothes, etc. Except for the tip about making sure your room is properly sealed, the majority of the hints in here have to deal with sound absorption, and they will not keep outside sounds away from your microphone. And remember...there is no such thing as soundproof foam!
