Unless the AI has efficient oversight I believe it has the the potential to misrepresent patient care. I would want human oversight along with the technology, at least for another few years. I truly think that as we roll out the utilization of these new technologies in the field, I imagine that the administrative rolls and employees now being employed in the field will slowly be redefined and totally eliminated. The business of healthcare will be fully automated and probably more efficient. ?? We are slowly doing away with the need for humans. Hopefully our doctors will remain humans rather than robots. I don’t know, but there’s something about human intuition that I do not think robots can acquire, but who knows what’s next?

While many patient-facing tasks can be automated—like interactive electronic bill payment experiences, statement optimization, and using AI to provide insights into trends and opportunities across your self-pay A/R—AI and automation cannot replace all patient-facing communications—or at least not immediately. The consumers in this market (patients) have various needs requiring a varying level of technology. What works for some does not work for all. This should be taken into account when deploying new technology. The patient experience has to stay top of mind when introducing tools that automate portions of the self pay collections process. You still need staff to support patients with 1:1 conversations.

The key to determining the correct technology to implement is understanding your organization's needs. You must understand where you need to find efficiencies—maybe you are understaffed and just cannot fill your open headcount, or maybe you are continually seeing backlog in a certain area and just cannot catch up. Several years ago, when generative AI wasn't as readily available, the sell was "get the simple tasks automated so your staff can focus on more complex work." Now, with the advances in AI, you can start handling some of the more complex work, too. This means a shift in approach to figuring out what tools to pull together to get you the biggest wins and creating a strategy with RPA, automation, genAI, and LLM tools.
