I would just like to add that read-throughs / table-reads don't necessarily have to be done as a group. I've had some great success doing it one on one with the lead first. It helps clear up some questions about the motivation of the character and whatnot. When you then integrate a locked-and-loaded lead into a group table-read, it helps create an even better environment of certainty and leadership in regards to the project.

It’s always worth exploring characters’ backstories. As well as directors and actors, writers often have built up backstories and character profiles that helped their characters drive the story in the first place, so it is always worth having that discussion.

There's "Character Games" you can explore. One I use all the time is to bring the two actors to a social setting. However, I ask one of the actors to go to the bar, or step outside. I tell the actor, that stays, a motivation. Something like, "Your friend owes you money." I then go to the other actor and give them a motivation. Something like, "You have a new business idea you want to pitch to your friend." I then have them come back and play out the scene in their characters. We stop each-other if we think that's not exactly what the character would do. What this allows us to do is internalize the motivations of the characters. The actor knows exactly WHY their character says the lines in the script instead of just memorizing the lines.

Flexibility and adaptability are key components I look for when auditioning actors for roles in my films. I like to ask them to try the part in a completely off kilter way simply to see how they take direction. Is this actor willing to push themselves in ways they were not expecting? Do they take direction well? Can they trust and be trusted? You get the answers to all these questions with how they respond to direction they may not have prepared to hear. And that adaptability will only strengthen the film in the end as well as their counterparts working alongside them.

Allow actors to have freedom to experiment with the script. When directors and producers offer creative control in a scene, it empowers actors to perform even better. Also, when it comes es to feedback, consider giving "a hug with the slug". Meaning, offer a compliment on something you like that they did to build them up, before providing the constructive criticism which may sting. Finally, gratitude goes a very, very long way...

Loosen the reigns... The more flexible and adaptable that actors can be, the more spontaneous and realistic the performance will be recieved. Don't over prepare, allow room for organic reactions to marinate. And, also encourage inner dialogue... The space between the script lines is where the profound realism lies. Good luck!

I always found fascinating random scenes in character that Scorsese captured in the Godfather that ended up being flashbacks in sequels (“Michael, let me show you how to make lasagna for 20 guys.”)
