Typically the artist does the research when provided with a theme. While research is good, we can never assume to understand what the public wants - best to welcome their voices throughout the process.

Do you have atria in the building, big staircases that you can display? What is the floor to ceiling height in public areas? How big are your elevators? All these will define your “canvas”, size, space, volume, materials to be used. I remember years ago looking to convert an art school to a hotel and the planning consultant asked “what do we do with loss of art space?” I said “tell them we will give them 3,000 sqm of display; we have a big lobby, restaurant, bar, and 12 floors of corridors…”

Do not make your development artistic, make your development art! In order to realize this, do not collaborate with the artist, work, create with the artist that is a part of the body of development. You have to choose person or people whom are suitable for this mission in your team for the project, all of you have to have the same feelings and inspirations..

It is important to commission the right artist/s that will work with the project. It isn’t about commissioning a piece necessarily. It is more to do with the linkage of hotel being a place of movement and art that is often stationary. There needs to be an art curator involved from the hotel design, preferably from site/building selection to limit constraints on the art and to harmonise the art with the hotel. If the art is contrarian to some extent, that too could be planned early on. But ultimately, you can fit art in to most hotels fabric and adapt as you need.

Although I understand this headline and some of the responses to it I think “evaluating art” is too scientific here. The important thing for me is this: “are they talking about your hotel? Your art?” If you are trending, if people walk through the door talking about your art or write about it online you know you have done right.

Aim to create a public art component and placemaking experience that stands the test of time and will become an organic and natural extension of the existing landscape and surrounding neighborhood. Sendo “pública”, a obra de arte deve estar em local, n?o apenas de fácil acesso, mas também de fácil circula??o por pedestres: um local seguro, convidativo à convivência diversa, limpo. Nos tempos atuais, poderiam chamar um lugar assim de “instagramável”, mas isso seria reduzir o sentido. Num país como o Brasil, isso seria reabilitar o convívio entre as pessoas no espa?o público, de modo que a arte teria o papel de (re)valorizar essa dinamica.

This will save you lots of trouble while creating great opportunities to do something great that brings traffic into your development.
