I disagree with this advice. This is Type 1 listening, which is listener-focused. Instead of improving Type 1 listening, leaders should develop Type 2 listening skills. Type 2 listening skills are speaker-focused and include paraphrasing, core messaging, and affect labeling. One leader I have trained in Type 2 listening sent me an email today, copying me on a thread she received. The email thanked her for her deep listening. Long term employees with over 40 years of experience felt "deeply heard" and were grateful that a senior leader took the time to truly listen. This is the power of Type 2 listening. It is the foundational skill of leadership.

This advice fails to mention that the skills of negotiation, mediation, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence must be formally learned under the tutelage of a skilled teacher. These are not skills one just picks up by osmosis. They must be learned and practiced. Fortunately, they are not hard to learn and do not take years of study.

This is an excellent checklist for any manager. "Group managers" tend to oversee an entire group or team. Their bottom line is the productivity of that group. So, I would add: 1. Know your metrics. What are the quantity and quality benchmarks for your group? 2. Move away from expectations to agreements. This is true in the relationship with your boss, your peers, and your reports. 3. Manage your time. Control your calendar. 4. Control is dead. Delegate and let people make mistakes. You are not responsible for your group...only to your group. That means putting people in a position where they are capable of success. 5. Be fun and engaging. Life's too short to play it any other way!
