Let's be honest here, giving feed back to you mentor is intimidating and awkward. What do you say to someone who in your eyes is perfect and someone you model your own work after? You may come across a new photo from your mentor which you think is great but you think it may need more lighting, a object should be moved or maybe over edited in post. Just remember to be respectful, make your wording sound less of critique and more of a suggestion because there is a deference between the two. Use specific examples while giving a suggestion, remember to give praise while giving your suggestions.

Yes if you have mentor treat them as a human too. Too many expectations and assumptions can do no good. Be sure to clearly communicate if any misunderstanding happens regarding the advice given or received. Value each others time and efforts, treat each other kindly communicate And in communication - share what is your goal and in what area. Share resources or inspirations that you see. Now this really depends on the nature of the relationship you have I would say. It really depends for me individually. Like you have many friends and your relationship with each one is individual and has nuances.

Giving and sharing feedback with your mentor is crucial, of course. It is the only way this back and forth mentoring can be useful. There is one little thing I would like to point out though; since a mentor is usually someone that is quite experienced, a young man or woman under a mentor’s wings can be somewhat intimidating by that. So, my advice is to ask as many questions as possible. No question is silly and you don’t have to ask only “sophisticated” questions. The better understanding you have on the basics, the easier will become to see the magic unfolding in front of your…camera.
