Both my experience in running soft-skill training sessions and what I read in wise books agrees on this: Every individual in a group ALREADY HAS AN IDEA about what the group norms should be like. It's the facilitator's job then to make those norms explicit, bring up different perspectives within the group, and give the group space to discuss them.

One of my favorite ways to involve a group in setting their group norms is the following: At the beginning of a training or a workshop, I prepare 5-6 slides, each slide representing one norm / rule I suggest to use in the session. Examples: "Park" unrelated items to the Parking lot, Write on Post-its in a legible manner, no devices in the room etc. On each slide there is just an image (from a photobank such as Unsplash.com) that is representing the rule - but just from the image, it's not 100% clear what the rule is. As I'm showing the slides, I'm asking the group: "What rule do you think this image represents?" They they try to guess; once they get it right, I ask: "Are you OK using this rule in our today's session?"

3 How to formulate group norms

It is important to spend some time at the beginning of a programme or group to establish group rules and/ or expectations. Some of these may be non-negotiable depending on the setting but ensuring that there is as much collaboration as possible will help create a sense of ownership and responsibility within the group. An open conversation or brainstorming exercise can help to get things moving. It can also be useful to say early on that a review of how effective the group rules are can be had at a later date if needed so if there are any challenges or additions needed these can be addressed.

Time may be needed to review the group rules / norms in session if challenges have arose. Being transparent with the group about the need to address any issues that arise is important and should be done in a non-judgemental manner. The focus should not be on blame but rather how the group can move forward in a constructive manner, reminding the group of the initial group rules set, and facilitating a discussion about how what has worked and what has been challenging. Drawing on positive examples from previous sessions can also be a good way to reinforce the constructive behaviours.
