In creating conducive learning environments, asking about student hobbies, backgrounds, even fears help tremendously with establishing classroom culture. Providing multiple points of communication entry such as open-ended discussion threads, chatrooms, live polls, etc. allow for students to share about their goals, and even concerns. Establishing support and a sense of trust is vital with learning. By utilizing principles of the UDL, when instructors put forth the effort of knowing the students, it increases student engagement and participation making learning more engaging and rewarding.

During a lesson, I present the class with different hands-on materials, videos and images relating to the concept being learned so as to maximize the learning process for the kinesthetics, auditory, and visual learners. At the end of the lesson, as a class we develop a colorful mind map or chart and put it up around the class where it serves as a model for reinforcement.

Because no two students learn the same way, each student can demonstrate best how they make sense of the material in different ways. Consider learning styles and end learning objectives achieved through different modes of learning. By doing so, you will not only give the student a sense of self-agency and autonomy but also allow them to make learning personal, meaningful, and relatable. Think back to when you were learning or in school. What were some assignments that stood out to you?

At the end of the week, I will give the students the option to choose in what way they would like to take their weekly assessments. The learners can either do a written or oral assessment, however they prefer. And for those doing written, they will have the choice of using their tabs or computers or writing on a paper.

When the pandemic hit and I was challenged to transition my theatre classes that focused on community based projects to virtual classes it offered me an opportunity to try new things. I already understood the power of UDL, but the challenge became different in a virtual world. To me, what worked best was designing assignments that students could accomplish in ways that suited their individual needs. They could focus on ideas and topics that interested them, present that information in ways that intrigued them, and assess their work based on that. I turned the focus on process and learning, rather than product. The end results was more creativity and ownership of their learning, and projects that reflected each individual student.

Students require an opportunity to express content and skills they have understood and learned. Provide students with options to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Allow for various forms of assessment, such as written assignments, multimedia projects, presentations, and group discussions. This offers a chance for students to evaluate their learning process and outcomes, and also to identify their strengths and weaknesses to determine areas for improvement.

The goal of the lesson and strength of your students should be the determinants of your modes of engagement, expression and assessments. Once the aforementioned are ascertained, you engage the students. However, every teacher must go the extra mile to ensure that the learners are comfortable with the methods, contents and digital tools adopted. The teacher should also foster engagement to minimize lesson barriers. The UDL is certainly the best education practice of the 21st century.

Regular check-ins, especially with students who exhibit unusual behavior could be the first step to them getting support from a trained professional. This is in line with UDL and assessing learners needs in order to respond appropriately.
