Satire is basically "smart mockery". When you want to illustrate a piece of work that pokes fun in an intelligent way at an important subject, take into account to have a smart approach to it. If you're using shock factor without symbolism, you're only provoking a reaction of mixed signals, and if you're using symbolism without purpose, you'll also be diluting your artwork. Pro tip; the viewer of your artwork is an essential element to your completed process, they are unconsciously finishing the story you are narrating in your illustration, when you discard that final step, the viewer is only left to wonder, and not the good kind of wondering.

One of the key elements in acquiring symbolism and metaphor into your artworks is a good easter egg. Having the right balance between showing the big picture of what you artwork is talking about, all while including subliminal messages with an "in your face" approach will really motivate the reader/viewer to wonder why is this particular element is displayed the way it is. Easter eggs are nothing new and have been around in notable artworks with Michelangelo’s Hidden Brain in The Creation Of Adam is only one of many.

Teniendo en cuenta que el objetivo es transmitir una idea por medio de la sátira o el humor, se ha de buscar la manera de despertar en el espectador la sensación de estar descubriendo una relación lógica pero escondida hasta ese momento sobre el tema en cuestión. I personally find the work of David Shrigley very funny. He takes a sardonic look at every day life in his work. He doesn't class it as illustration though because it's not really trying to convey any specific message, it's mainly just absurd. It conveys a general attitude of irreverence. Although this article encourages a lot of consideration into what you put into your artwork, I think his work is funny because it's very spontaneous and not overly contrived.

In illustration, especially satirical or caricature illustration, I find the “less is more” mantra to be extremely important. Choosing one element of many to exaggerate will convey a message satire far more effectively than attempting to exaggerate several elements simultaneously. This is especially important if your subject matter must be easily identifiable in to an audience. Choose wisely, choose prominently, but choose one.
