As a seasoned corporate trainer, I've found these strategies work well: 1. Clear expectations: Define goals and deadlines upfront 2. Match tasks to skills: Assign work that fits each team member's strengths 3. Trust and let go: Avoid micromanaging; give autonomy 4. Regular check-ins: Schedule brief updates to offer support Remember, effective delegation isn't just about offloading work; it's about growing your team's capabilities. I've seen countless professionals thrive when given the right opportunities.

But increasingly I am seeing and adding to my own coaching, training and consulting work the additional need for: Ability to take Initiative, Motivation to learn, grow and improve, Readiness for more, Drive and a sense of Purpose.

In my upcoming book, Revisiting Work-Life Balance I introduce what I call the time/energy quadrant. Sometimes our people will want to do something but it drains their energy, other times it is energy giving but time consuming. Evaluate the four quadrants of time-energy for each person aligned to the task you want to delegate - this will help you and the team perform best while enjoying work-life balance and wellbeing.

Once you have identified which tasks to delegate, consider the strengths, weaknesses, interests, and preferences of your team members, as well as their workload, availability, and potential. Assess the current and desired capabilities and performance levels of your team. Communicate the purpose, benefits, and expectations of the tasks, and invite team members to volunteer, apply, or nominate themselves or others. Evaluate their suitability, readiness, and willingness, and assign tasks based on a fair, transparent, and objective process.

Delegating doesn't equate to abandoning your team; clear and consistent guidance and support are essential for their success. Set SMART goals, define roles and responsibilities, and establish rules and boundaries, while providing necessary resources and tools. Offer coaching, mentoring, feedback, and recognition, addressing any issues promptly.

Drive, Motivation, Purpose, Readiness - The Heart of the Inner 'Game' Absence of these factors is why your best team members – and especially gifted 2nd Team People with real potential, leave the organization prematurely. People are more than the sum of their Competency, Performance and Potential parts. Everyone, EVERYONE, has inner Drive and Motivation that can be tapped into – and they want it to be tapped into to give them a shot at something more, development and e.g., Succession Planning only ‘works’ on the back of true Employee Engagement (EE) – if you don’t have good EE, you’ve lost the game before you’ve even walked on to the field.
