I'm a big fan of Simple Practice. It has all the features I need and it's HIPPA compliant, which is essential for counseling work. The features I like include integrated billing, a case noting system, a calendar, access to metrics, and a video conferencing platform. The screen share feature is ideal for career counseling because it allows you and the client to look at resources and application materials together. Bonus: you can create your own forms, upload docs, message clients through the platform, and add a calendar/scheduling widget to your website. Simple Practice should probably hire me as a spokeswoman.

Another very effective career assessment is Life’s Core Purpose. Alongside the various personality type assessments, this one focuses on Competence and Passion. It highly compliments, StrengthsFinder, for example, making it more effective. Whatever assessment you use for your clients, it’s important to make the information applicable directly to their lives. Assessments could be fun, but unless the client is taught, how do use them in their career there just interesting activities.

I caution people about using assessments or statistics that are not Canadian or based on research in their own local labour market. Just as important online assessments that FORCE choices are not going to be as accurate as those such as Career Cruising that permit the user to declare a topic to be not applicable.

One thing I also find helpful are free website pages such as weebly and others. I always encourage a suite account for file sharing and have found github student development pack and other resources helpful resources for tools that support portfolio and document management.

We consistently tell clients to ask for recommendations on LinkedIn. Only an account owner can write it from their account. That means, no fake reference letters. A recruiter can read them, click on the person and ask more questions via InMail. Makes the recruiter's job so much easier. Use LinkedIn Profinder to get proposals for resume and coaching services. Check the provider's recommendations! Also, all those "friends" on Facebook etc. should be willing to refer you or tell you about upcoming jobs.

I have found that this specific platform , LinkedIn, has been very influential in my putting my accolades out there for networking purposes and growth. Moreover, I have had a multitude of individuals and companies reach out to me about different job opportunities. Utilizing this platform to collaborate with others such as that of career counselors not only boost camaraderie but also fosters inclusion and a since of belonging. That is paramount in todays society due to the various but significant differences between those within.
Online communities are online groups or forums that bring together people who share a common interest, goal, or challenge, and provide them with a space to exchange information, advice, support, and feedback. Online communities can help your clients find peers, mentors, role models, and resources that can inspire and motivate them in their career journey. Online communities can also help you as a career counselor to learn from other practitioners, share best practices, and find opportunities for collaboration and professional development. Some of the online communities that you can use for career counseling are Reddit, Quora, Career Contessa, and The Muse. These communities offer diverse and engaging discussions and content on various career topics.

First thing first, I have found having some meetings help career seekers. Their journey is in stages, some studies compare job loss to the grief cycle… therefore helping someone explore career choices while updating their resume is 2 zones of the process and should happen at separate times and that is okay. O*Net, job centers, talent communities, and advisors (don’t do career development alone) are my key tools when helping someone grow.
