Or they don't find out what has changed as a result of their feedback. It's great to use multiple sources and methods if you have the time, the money and the commitment to doing something about the findings. Otherwise keep it short and simple and quantitative.

I was a college student from 2018-2024. Oftentimes students wouldn't give professors feedback unless 1) they received extra credit for it, and 2) they either had a positive or a negative experience with the professor. Take each student into a quiet space during class and interview them, see what they like, what they didn't, and focus only on solution-oriented feedback systems. Instead of, "The class was terrible and the professor was awful," say, "The use of class time was mismanaged, and instead of lecturing for three hours, the course time could have been used to do case studies and other activities. And that you all define terms in the same way. Asking a student to rate the extent to which the course improved their analytic thinking and reasoning, for example, assumes they define analytic thinking and reasoning in the same way you do. It also assumes that their analytic thinking and reasoning had room for improvement which may not be the case. Designing good questions is better done collaboratively. Or even better, by someone who can unpack assumptions and clearly align course objectives/outcomes with questions.

If you have the time and funds to collect feedback at different stages of the course that's great BUT you must also be prepared to analyse the data as soon as possible and action any relevant feedback. Almost all of the students I've spoken to over the years have said that if they provide pulse feedback during a course they expect changes to be made to that course while they are studying. Actioning feedback can be quite straightforward if it's a minor technical or communication concern. Issues with staff or the fundamental nature of the course are much more complicated and potentially delicate. So, be careful what you wish for and only collect data from students if you have the time and capacity to response to their feedback.

Unless you have been collecting and responding to student feedback effectively for decades you don't need a complicated regression equation to tell you what's working and what isn't. At a course level, there are often only a small number of responses so reading every open ended comment is much more valuable than running them through some software. Teaching staff find these comments much more useful than the ratings - I've been told they typically don't even look at the numbers (unless they're thinking about putting in for a promotion!)

Do not take student comments personally; instead, remember to consider them within their context. Feedback is gathered to measure the gap between your perspective and that of the students. This applies to interpreting comments as well: students may express their needs in ways that may not be appealing to you. Therefore, avoid being distracted by their manner of expression. Contextualize comments and identify patterns. Clearly define what constitutes a pattern. For instance, what percentage of comments should indicate a pattern? In a class of 500 students, a pattern based on 10 repeated comments may be questionable. Compare your findings against your objectives before taking action.

Pro tip - don't treat student feedback like it's a research project that's undergoing rigorous hypothesis testing. The aim of the game is to ensure that students have a great education experience while achieving the required learning outcomes. Thinking too long and hard about bias, reliability and representativeness will stop you from taking timely action to either remediate a situation or encourage an educator who is doing well. And maybe don't stress about generalizability. Feedback is very course specific and student cohorts can be very different. Generalising across courses or years may not always be appropriate.

Share student feedback in a timely manner. When the experience (whether a course, a residency, a workshop) is still fresh, share the feedback with stakeholders who can reflect on the feedback while their memory of the experience is fresh.

Act on the feedback. When feedback is requested, analyzed, digested, and shared in a timely manner, you can incorporate changes quickly. When making changes based on feedback, share that you have done so. Constituents are more likely to respond in the future if they see that prior feedback was valued.
