What are some EdTech design principles for promoting student engagement?

Es extremadamente importante poder medir esos objetivos en cada aplicación que introducimos en el aula. Una acción formativa que no se mide carece de valor, por lo que no solo ha de alienarse con los objetivos sino poseer herramientas para la medición y el resultado.

Hola a todos, les comparto desde mi experiencia en EdTech cuando se trata de asignaturas que implican el proceso de investigación científica, me he enfocado en algunos métodos o idear alternativas de solución para problemas de didáctica en las clases de metodología de investigación, cuando se trata de internalizar las técnicas e instrumentos, ellos deben realizar entrevistas, grupos de discusión y documentan la experiencia, graban un vídeo sobre una problemática y trabajamos el feedback en diferentes sesiones síncronas o sesiones de foros de discusión. Valoro además de la medición del logro de objetivos, las competencias más la motivación, el ejemplo combinado con experiencia.

Sometimes, we overlook the fact that educational tools are just that—tools. The focus should be on the user and the environment in which they will interact. How much time do they have to learn? Do they have the necessary resources to utilize the tool effectively? Do they even have access to internet service? It is imperative to consider these factors in order to define the capabilities of the tool. Additionally, adapting the language and content according to the circumstances at hand is essential for meaningful engagement and learning. Therefore, it is crucial to align the educational technology not only with learning objectives but also with the practical realities of the learners' context to ensure its efficacy and relevance.

Involve students in the design process to understand their needs, preferences, and challenges. Create personas and user stories to guide the design decisions.

Edtech can often lose its effectiveness until feedback is effective and prompt. Include feedback strategies as simple as badges, levels, certificates etc while also putting in comments in discussions and showing them color coded data that helps them understand their own capacities and provides a way forward.

Optimizing student engagement through EdTech involves two key facets: feedback and progress tracking. Constructive feedback fosters self-awareness and improvement. Integrate immediate, precise feedback mechanisms into your EdTech, empowering students to gauge their performance and enhance their skills. In my experience, tracking and displaying students’ progress through a visual dashboard was highly effective. It not only motivated students by showing them how far they’ve come, but also helped them identify areas they need to focus on.

Try incorporating a variety of communication tools that cater to different learning styles and preferences, such as interactive whiteboards, video conferencing for real-time discussions, and collaborative workspaces where students can co-create projects and documents. Encouraging peer-to-peer learning through structured activities like peer reviews and group assignments can also deepen understanding and promote a sense of community. Gamification elements like leaderboards and badges for collaborative achievements can further motivate and engage students. Importantly, providing spaces for informal interactions, akin to the social areas found in physical educational settings, can help build a stronger sense of community and belonging.

In my experience interacting and collaborating with students can provide an inclusive learning environment.Thereby students are more likely to engage ,participate in group discussions during lessons . Also they are more likely to learn ,ask and answer questions when they know their voices matters and you value their contributions .This can be done during online and face /face session .The first step for an educator is be approachable and friendly yet setting professional boundaries.

One thing I found useful was integrating peer review mechanisms in assignments. This not only promoted interaction but also helped students understand different viewpoints and improve their own work based on constructive feedback.

Focusing on personalization is key for any edtech tool used in education. Ensuring that the tool of choice allows for differentiation and adaption can enhance the user expereince for not only the student but also the educator. In classrooms of today with larger classes sizes and a variety of student needs, tools that can cater to the needs of individual students is critical and necessary. Leading with equity in mind as we choose tech tools is key.

El dise?o de la interfaz y de la experiencia de usuario deben tener en cuenta los objetivos de aprendizaje y pedagógicos propuestos para la herramienta EdTech creada. Esto quiere decir que la experiencia de usuario no puede interferir en el cómo se aprende utilizando la herramienta EdTech ni puede modificar la obtención de los resultados que el estudiante conseguiría por su cuenta.

Simplifying how your product looks and works makes it easier for students and teachers to understand the material. There is only so much bandwidth for learning new material, and if you spend it on trying to navigate the interface or find the pertinent information, then the learner will not engage with the content effectively.

Educational games can enhance learner engagement since a) it is a familiar, visually appealing medium for youngsters, b) there is scope for exploration without fear of failure. However mere gamification through use of rewards etc wont make significant impact. Educational games can be received better by the audiences if the act of playing becomes the act of learning. This can be achieved with endogenous design. In endogenous design the game is created using the interesting elements within the content. This is in contrast to commonplace design where the content remains unchanged but is merely wrapped with a game layer. At TCEA this year, I saw an amazing presentation about how to use gamification in meaningful ways. One strategy that seemed specifically effective was to have students work in groups to complete a review. The format of the review would be stations, and the students would have a rubric for each station where they could achieve between 1-3 stars ??. At the end day 1 the teacher would post the leader board (Google slide), showing how many stars each groups had received in the stations they had complete. When this technique was used, the presenter said that his students would come and ask if they could redo stations to get more stars!! Instant feedback and review for the students.

It's a useful way to support different learner styles and learner levels. In my experience I've found that promoting learner autonomy also develops the learners confidence and agency. It can be a great way for the teacher to understand what works and what does not for the learner. But if not done with care it could make a student feel overwhelmed and lack focus.

Design principles for EdTech should prioritize AI-driven customization, enabling the creation of adaptive learning paths that cater to individual student needs and preferences. The interface should be intuitive, allowing students to seamlessly navigate through a curriculum that dynamically adjusts to their progress and challenges them at their own pace. In this way, the design itself becomes a silent tutor, guiding students through a personalized educational journey, and empowering them to take charge of their learning experiences.

Sometimes we focus too hard on strengthening engagement and easily lose sight of how learners are absorbing content. EdTech is easily adapted to fit different needs and modalities. Take time to know your learners, and consider your EdTech when your conducting a needs assessment. Providing an accessible and safe space for learner autonomy while preserving content impact is key.

Encourage learners to set their own goals, make choices in their learning journey, and take ownership of their progress. Provide opportunities for self-assessment and reflection, allowing them to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Experience is key. While some believe that engagement simply stems from high-quality content and frequent notifications, this is a misconception. Student engagement is a multifaceted reflection of the student experience, encompassing quality content, good service, clear and measurable progress tracking, consistent feedback and communication, and the ease of use of the Learning Management System (LMS).

Estos seis principios clarifican las ideas a considerar para promover la participación de tus alumnos usando lo que pone a nuestro alcance la EdTech. Mucho dependerá de tu propia creatividad para incorporar lo que más convenga en el momento adecuado. Recuerda muchos elementos se pueden incorporar: gamificación de las lecciones, foros de discusión (que sean incluso en línea, no cerrados al momento de clase), fomentar la creación colaborativa de contenido entre los estudiantes, incorporar recursos educativos digitales (como videos, infografías, mapas interactivos) que lleven al estudiante a aumentar su experiencia de aprendizaje. La pregunta que deberás hacerte siempre es en qué y para qué te ayudará ese recurso en su objetivo de aprendizaje.

A sala de aula deveria de ser um laboratório de experimentos para o educador. Com intencionalidade, testar diversas ideias de aulas apoiadas em diversas teorias e ver o que vai dar melhor resultado com a turma e com os alunos que possuem maior dificuldade. Para mim, essa é a tarefa do educador.

PRIMERO ETIQUETA éTICA DIGITAL, DESPUéS… El aprendizaje tech crea alternativas de aprendizaje auténtico guiado con mentor y autodirigido por alumno. Pasos: 1. Etiqueta digital. Retos tech y uso ético. Decálogos de conducta digital. 2. Solución de problemas reales, ajustados a interés y nivel de alumnos para la participación activa. ?Qué esperamos de ellos? 3. Uso de métodos iterativos, creativos y participativos: “Agile Learning”, “Lean Canvas” intercambio de roles. 4. Elección de “Tech Stacks” (DBMS con IA generativa), “Frameworks” (Python, etc), bibliotecas de búsqueda, etc. 5. Verificación del impacto del trabajo. 6. Compartir con stakeholders, o “business Angels”. 7. Celebrar la actitud del grupo, errores y aciertos de forma creativa.
