At the end of just about every interview I’ve ever sat in on as a superintendent, assistant superintendent, and principal, the inevitable final question is asked by the panel: “Do you have any questions for us?” I can’t tell you how many people are not prepared for that moment and press ahead by asking the WRONG questions of the panel. Questions that will help YOU decide if YOU are a fit for them are best. Keep it positive and rooted in genuine curiosity. Three of my favorites: “As an organization, what is it that you are most proud of?” “What do you believe are the greatest strengths of your organization?” “How do you assist new members of your team, like me, transition into their role?”

4 Use evidence and examples

One of the best ways to show your critical thinking skills is to back up your claims and arguments with evidence and examples. This shows that you are not just making assumptions or opinions, but that you have done your research, used data, or applied relevant theories or frameworks. Specifics and examples separate a good interview from a GREAT interview. As an example, if you are interviewing to be a school principal, a typical question might be asked about building a positive school culture. Just about everyone interviewing will say the same basic things about that. To separate yourself from the rest and, more importantly, be memorable, share a short yet specific and detailed example of how you have actually done that and what approach you might take if given the position. 5 Reflect and improve

Finally, critical thinking skills are not static, but dynamic. They require constant reflection and improvement, as you encounter new situations, challenges, or feedback. Therefore, you should show that you are open to learning, adapting, and growing as an educator. You can do this by acknowledging your strengths and weaknesses, seeking feedback, and setting goals for your professional development. You can also share some examples of how you have reflected on your own teaching, learned from your mistakes, or implemented new strategies or tools to enhance your practice.

If you do not get the position you interview for, take the extra time to ask the hiring manager if they have any feedback they can share with you. I have found that most are willing to share something with you that will help you grow. This also gives you the opportunity to say “thank you” for the interview and leave a good impression. Remember, today, it might be “no;” tomorrow, it might be “yes.”
