What are some creative ways to use motion blur in your studio photography images?

Try I.C.M (intentional camera movement) in the studio. It’s a simple technique but it’s hard to get good consistent results. It’s a lot of fun to experiment with though.

Motion blur is a visual effect that happens when there is movement between the camera and the subject being filmed or photographed. It causes moving objects to appear blurred in the image, creating a sense of motion or speed. In photography achieved by keeping the camera's shutter open for a longer time. In cinematography, it occurs when fast-moving objects are captured. The amount of motion blur in a film or video depends on factors such as shutter speed, frame rate, and the speed of the moving objects. Additionally, post-processing techniques using software tools can enhance this effect, allowing for the inclusion of dynamic or artistic elements.

Slow shutter speed is a must and make sure you have your camera on a tripod. There is no ready made receipt in terms of aperture, iso and shutter speed, depends on the results you want to achieve. For portraits I like to have the eye , at least one of them, in focus. It is a trial and error exercise, no more, no less! Experiment with multiple shutter speeds, and make sure the model makes slow movements.

Most often used to "freeze" a moving object or person in frame portrait style, while permitting the surrounding background with its ambient light to stream by with a pleasant softened effect, or to highlight and showcase a single subject in dim surroundings that cannot remain still for a duration adequate to achieve a sharp image with a long exposure, for example a night portrait with different or dim lighting on subject that differs from the background, and the background needs a long exposure to achieve the desired clarity or exposure.

Panning, zooming, slow shutter speed and the use of intentional camera movement to create blur can contribute to wonderful, evocative works of art that are often referred to as impressionist photographs. These techniques can create dreamy scenes reminiscent of impressionist paintings.
