I like to think of brand purpose as a simple question: "What is that thing we wake up everyday and fight for?" Taking a beat to really sit with this question can guide you into the overall attitude your brand will carry. Your purpose is a big driver of connecting your business to your ideal consumer.

From my experience, one of the effective ways is to embed brand color or unique patterns cohesively into the product's aesthetics. These subtle yet consistent elements create an instant visual connection to the brand. Incorporating brand values into the product's functionality or features is equally impactful. For instance…if the brand values sustainability, utilizing eco-friendly materials or emphasizing recyclability in the product design aligns with this ethos.

Most of the time brand’s perceived value is a result of the overall product experience. If you want to align your brand purpose with the brand’s perceived value, you should work on a great product experience, especially on product’s fonctionality. If the consumer doesn’t get your brand purpose from your product, then you will be overpromising.

Numerous iconic brands are instantly recognizable through their distinctive logos. Well-established brands find it easier to integrate these elements into long-standing products, whereas newcomers face a more challenging task. Consistency holds the key—maintain the same color scheme and style, steering clear of frequent rebrands or logo changes. If alterations are necessary, keep them minimal and complement them with a well-thought-out marketing campaign. Having a versatile logomark that seamlessly integrates into all your marketing materials is a plus.

Microsoft has been able to create a strong and recognizable brand that is trusted by millions of people. First, it’s important to define a small and carefully selected set of assets as your brand’s core palette. This can include colour: Virgin group’s ‘lust’ red #E4181E, for example. A distinctive shape like the Heinz label. A sound: the five-notes of the T-Mobile jingle. A set of words: Under Armour’s revisited ‘Protect this house.’ Or an iconic behaviour, like your first name written on a cup at Starbucks. Three to five items are enough to ensure control and consistency, which is critical to building long-term brand value. Applying one or more to your product design will reinforce recognition: the star on the front of every Mercedes-Benz, the colour of a Tiffany box, or the LV monogram are iconic examples.

Most people say "make the logo bigger" but one of the most important pieces of your brand identity is color. When working with clients and developing their color palettes we like to see what colors can they "own" and truly make theirs. Expanding your brand elements across various packages, social presence, website is relatively easy if you have a very well defined identity suite. The key here is to stick to it, you are more likely to become bored by your own brand before people start to truly associate the visuals to your business. Consistency is key here.

Think of your product as an extension of your brand experience - it's where a person will land from other branded assets so its crucial the journey looks, feels and sounds consistent. Always lead with distinctive assets - colours, logos, typography, slogans and ensure they are sprinkled across the journey to hand-hold the consumer.

My team is currently working on building apps and platforms to be used by Indian farmers. The brand purpose is on the lines of 'empowering Indian farmers'. And that's why the loader animation has a crop growing new leaves, the progress bar has elements of seed growth and the brand voice is 'Empathetic', giving our users a sense of 'we are there for you' in every app copy. This is how you create a brand experience.

The most important thing to consider while designing a brand experience is that the emotional aspect should be sincere. Consumer should really feel that these emotional touches of brand experience come from “the heart”. The moment consumer feels the personnalization is actually more benefit to company than to consumer, he/she loses believes in the brand.

Think surprise features that make them smile, personalized details that show you care, or even interactive elements that turn your product into an experience. We're not just selling a product; we're selling a feeling, a vibe that stays with them. So, let's design your products to be more than just useful.

We know storytelling is compelling. Stories that tie to a company’s purpose make a product more enduring than relying on other brand identification elements, which can change every few years. Unless you’re in a highly competitive CPG space where frequent product revision is expected or needed to stay competitive.

Make sure every design element you use is there for a reason and has purpose and meaning. Each image or graphic should convey the user’s experience at that particular step - that could look like representing what they are doing next or what the desired result will be.

A large part of building a brand is understanding how each of the parts work together. For brands, their story is one of the few unique, ownable creative assets they have. Product can be copied, price can be matched, but competitors can't steal a brand story. Most importantly, the brand story isn't just about origin of the business. This is my personal favorite aspect of branding. Through storytelling, we can articulate the brand's values and purpose to customers who genuinely care. By doing so, we can also foster a sense of community, uniting individuals with shared values and aspirations, regardless of the specific product or service. In today's world, having a good product alone is no longer sufficient. It's crucial to create something that serves a greater purpose as well.

It's like the narrative that weaves your brand into the hearts of your customers. This story is all about who you are, what you're up to, and why you're doing it. Now, when it comes to designing your products, we want them to be like chapters in this amazing story. Think of it like this: your brand has a unique language, and we can speak it through your product design. Using colors, shapes, or textures, we're going to create a vibe that resonates with your brand's values, mission, or even its history. In simpler terms, we're not just designing products; we're crafting experiences that connect with people on a deep, emotional level.

This is a sometimes overlooked opportunity. Co-creating with the people using your product will offer great insights into things they like and don’t like. You will likely uncover some surprises. Pairing these insights with a vision for where you’re going is fire ?? for product teams.

Test… Test… Test… Test your audience’s reaction, emotional response, heat map. That’s why focus groups and surveys were the best way to indicate the effectiveness of a product design. Today, we have something far more actionable, easier and straightforward —> brain mapping. All the data we get from research and our customers, if we don’t collab with customers then the branding and marketing strategies are useless. Use customers and research before executing the strategies !

Setting the tone, or creating the boundaries centred around your co-creation or collaboration frameworks is key. You want to communicate what those boundary lines are early on, so that when you get to testing stage, there is mutual benefit in this.

Co creating brand and product elements with customer is great way to prevent marketing myopia in addition to create great brand stories.

I can't think of a better example right now than Tesla's Cybertruck. It showcases how innovation and differentiation can be embedded in a brand's product design, and turned into an iconic representation of what they stand for. Every aspect of the Cybertruck is a statement. The design doesn't dare fit in. It breaks away from traditional truck designs with its distinct angular shape, stainless steel exoskeleton, steering wheel design...everything inside and out.

To effectively distinguish your brand, it’s crucial to blend innovation and creativity, not just in the visual elements like colors and fonts, but also in the product’s design, functionality, and efficiency. An appealing design is important, but it must be matched by a positive and effective customer experience. If a product looks good but falls short in performance, it fails to meet customer expectations. Thus, setting your product apart requires a focus on delivering a unique and innovative user experience, alongside creative design.

Consider product design and solution design - what other ways can your brand add value and showcase what you stand for? If you sell a piece of hardware, what about the way you educate the user? Or a more user friendly way for trouble shooting?
