What I've found working with machines that throw faults is that I benefit from looking at "fault history". I will also add to this paragraph my endorsement on finding out how a system is supposed to work, and how individual systems within it work with each other. For example, if a vacuum that is failing to provide suction causes a reduction in performance, and I'm unaware that the vacuum is created by pressure from another system, I'm going to be frustrated in my search for that particular vacuum pump (which doesn't exist).

For instance you could swap out your microcontroller for a known working one, but that wouldn't tell you if it's because the original component was faulty or if it were experiencing firmware issues.
