What are some common space planning mistakes and how to avoid them?

I can spot an amature space plan easily where the planner / furniture sales firm has ignored the golden rules of human use workspace The positioning of display screens relative to daylight The positioning configuration of work desks reletive to human ergonomics , human nature, best practice The positioning of and access to primary and secondary circulation Space planning without data gathering and adjacency matrix

Not considering access of the space. This week I saw a designer ordering furniture that could not fit in the lift to be taken up to the third floor.

Technology will always introduce new means of efficiency. Example: The LED SCREEN is revolutionary in space management from small to large communications devices changes how branding, communication and groups interact spatially.

Neglecting to consider negative space in space planning which is crucial to functionality of a space and its overall visual and psychological effects.

One thing I've learned having been in the contract furniture industry for a decade and collaborating with architectural designers is the impact that the furniture placement and type has on the architectural shell, and vice versa. Many times, furniture is an after thought. Most times, furniture activates the space and drives flow more than originally thought. For example, a beautiful open space with appropriately located egress and sightlines architecturally, can be drivers for furniture placement and ultimately negate the original design intent. It's important for furniture considerations as early on in the circulation plan as possible, while also considering the visual and acoustical privacy needs.

Add LED lighting everywhere. Today fixtures go everywhere - ceiling, walls, floors, nooks and crannies. Color can be set without limits of paint on the all. This will change moods and focus as the activities within a space migrate.

This is a common mistake. Without evaluating the space and listening to those who have qualms, you can forget why you first designed the space from the beginning. Considering any and all feedback and addressing issues at hand will make the space well rounded and achieve a design that fulfills what it was set out to accomplish.

One of the most critical errors that businesses often make is the oversight of conducting comprehensive customer research and gaining a deep understanding of the end user's needs. Designing based on assumptions rather than a thorough understanding of the user can result in common spaces that do not meet the actual needs or desires of the intended audience.

The biggest mistake a designer makes is not considering FLS code requirements. It is misconception that designers only pay attention to finishes/colors/materials. We create space that's safe for the end-users. We review egress path requirements and occupant load calculation so we can tell our client how many plumbing fixtures they need and how many exits they need.

One thing I've learned is that what's currently popular in space planning is that it's never static and continuously changing and evolving. And sometimes just like fashion or color palates, they reinvent themselves and return to a former version of what was popular before.

Flexibility and adaptability of space for changing uses, users and technology is often overlooked at the programming or space planning stage. Many planners focus on the present use and possibly known future short term plans which is understandable, but there should be at least some longer term vision or forecasting to allow for longevity and adaptability of the space use with minimal disruption and cost.
