Establishing a culture of compliance within your organization from the start is vital, making adherence to regulations a core element of your fintech journey.

Compliance, like KYC, is usually the first step and can also bring friction during your product journey. However, it can become your best friend if done right! Customers are primarily looking for seamless and transparent experience that they can trust. In rapidly emerging FinTech markets like India, where there is still ample opportunity to refine the compliance experience, such as KYC, your platform can stand out by delivering a niche experience that enhances conversion rates along your product journey.

When opening bank account for FinTech startups remember, that the decision maker approving your application is not someone commercially focused. In most cases the decision will be with the risk and compliance department. Never send your investor deck to your bank for the purpose of bank account opening - it is too ambitious and it will make you look risky. You will see many long-successful companies effectively implementing this in their PLC. This is often a reason, why they are always ahead of their competition.

Remember that to change the customer behaviour is extremely difficult, time consuming and expensive. Try to integrate your solution seamlessly in existing customer journey. Less friction and more intuitive simplicity the better. Understand where are your customers now and deliver your painkiller there. Embed it in their life effortlessly for customers.

While every FinTech would like to scale quickly, this usually comes with inherent disadvantages. While you may have a great traction on user base, a lack of consistency in delivering a great customer experience or support will impact your churn rate and NPS. Never fall in love with your own product. As a journalist covering this space for the past decade, one of the key differences I've observed between successful fintech entrepreneurs and the rest is their willingness to pivot. I've met many founders who were blindsided by their own obsession with their idea that they refuse to see that there's no market fit. While on the flip side many of the successful founders I've met, their offerings today are completely different from their first iteration and they do so without deviating from their core mission.

Most fintechs that have bee truly successful have been those that keep working on improving the existing user experience till they've almost perfected it. Once they've done it, they add more features and monetise those, however, the core feature for which the product was built remains the key focus. Take the case of Wise. Even after a decade of their launch, they have an unwavering focus on the key problem that the company was formed to solve, which was to bring down the costs of cross border payments. That focus reflects in their quarterly as well as yearly product news letters. Ofcourse, they create innovative features that they have monetized well such as virtual accounts for SMEs, however, the core purpose is always on top!

In the world of FinTech, it's easy to get caught up in the nitty-gritty of coding and algorithms and lose sight of the bigger picture. We must always remember the core purpose: to improve financial services for everyone. For instance, instead of just focusing on developing a new payment app, think about how it can make banking more accessible for people in rural areas who lack access to traditional banks. Always keep the larger goal in mind to ensure our innovations truly make a positive impact.

It is hard to define your product, assemble a great team, and create a valuable impact without a clear mission. Moreover, mission enables you to clearly demonstrate your identity and brand, setting you apart from competitors. It will guide you in daily decision-making, having significant positive impacts on both employee and customer engagement.

Fintech entity name should not include controversial or provocative language or misleading terms, such as “exchange” or “bank" etc unless you are applying for a banking or an exchange license. In some countries crypto activities are still on the black list: avoid including words such as “crypto”, “token”, “DeFi”, “decentralized”, “DAO” into your entity name. Your trade register information and Articles of Association include information about the purpose of the entity’s activities or industry category. Make sure that the description of the activities in the trade register and in the Articles matches the description you announce on the website and in the bank account application forms.
