What are some of the common pitfalls and challenges of self-producing and mixing your own music?

At production stage, we hear the song a thousand times and the bad frequencies creates home in our ears. We can't remove them in mixing because we can recognize them. Mixing needs a fresh pair of ears which can differentiate the sounds.

Self-producing and mixing your own music comes with common pitfalls and challenges. It's easy to lose objectivity, leading to overproduction or missed flaws. Balancing technical skills with creative vision can be tough, often resulting in compromised sound quality. Limited resources and equipment can restrict your potential. Additionally, the process can be time-consuming and mentally exhausting, increasing the risk of burnout. Without external feedback, it's harder to catch mistakes or gain new perspectives. Understanding these challenges can help you prepare and seek the right support, ensuring a more successful music production journey.

I'll add just a slightly different approach to this phase. When you create something, the last thing you should think about is workflow and goals. Notice I didn't say "don't think about them." Just do it later. First it's what do you want to communicate in what you're making. Your audience is YOU. If you make what you want to hear, you've found your audience. You, and a vast bunch of people who like what you like. Once you start tracking with emotion and passion, your tools are there to make it happen. Also know that what you set out to make, most of the time is different than what you pictured. Happy surprises. Go with it.

Audio engineering, or recording, can be a bit much for a recording artist; let alone mixing. Never be afraid to go to Youtube a learn a few tricks. There are also some pre-mixed templates out there that can give your sound a good step in the right direction. Professional mixes are always best, but perhaps it may be best to get some feedback on your song before investing in professional mixing services.

This one stage can make or break the final product. A professional quality mix needs professional grade tools, and solving the sonic frequencies puzzle requires a very different skillset than composing, playing or arranging a song. Mixing is a deep subject of its own, so if you're starting it is better to get professional help while you get familiar with the tools & processes required to achieve a compelling, unique and distinctive sound mix.

When people are self-producing, they may lack a few key elements that can affect the outcome. 1) Reference speakers/studio monitors that do not meet industry standards 2) lack of training on effective use of analog, pre-amps, compression, EQ, acoustic floor and ceiling, digital, plug-ins, software, and/or outboard gear 3) lack of objectivity about how the mix sounds 4) not using recordings as references for overall and individual track mix 5) not knowing the correct frequencies needed to mix for different outlets - home, car, club, radio, online, film, tv, online, etc. which can lead to subpar mixes 6) lack of stylistic knowhow 7) lack of understanding of frequency response for voice, speech, instruments, electric instruments, etc.

Sometimes the hard part to mixing your own track is not having the proper equipment and space. The track my come out sounding like your in space because you don’t have speakers.
