What are some common code smells that indicate the need for refactoring with design patterns?

An example of a code smell would be Type Casting an interface instead of using it for the method extraction. This smells because we must now try/catch any usage as that type. This can also result in using the objects type for conditional branching, this becomes difficult to maintain when new classes implement interfaces just to satisfy the condition.

I guess as long as you weren’t copying code, this is true.
