What are some of the common challenges or risks of scope creep in project delivery?

In my experience, one of the most common reasons for scope creep is new insights that surface during the course of a project. During execution, team members learn as well, often resulting in a slightly different approach than what was planned for - leading to a much better solution, but also to scope creep.

Drawing from my extensive experience in project management, I firmly believe that preventing scope creep is vital. To achieve this, it's imperative to establish a robust requirement management process, engage stakeholders from the outset, clearly define and document project scope, communicate effectively, and implement a change control process to evaluate and manage any scope modifications. What's more, keeping a close eye on project progress in relation to the defined scope can help to identify and tackle any potential scope creep at an early stage.

Whilst I agree with Liza’s insights, I believe part of the problem is that organisations often embark on programmes that seek to adapt off-the-shelf solutions, than adopt them. The consequence is that programmes take far too long to implement, making new insights on course inevitable. Scope creep can be managed by high rigour business change management emphasising to end users that the new system will require some changes to the way they work. And that their desires that the new system do the same things in the same ways as before will not be accepted as a valid requirement of the new system.
