Now I do truly agree with this. Mixing in stereo gives you very full mix. And it allows you play with your tracks finding a perfect harmony. Meaning you can separate your sounds, ie.., piano and bass drum on the right and the bass guitar and toms and snares on the left, allowing for some great creation stories.

Since we hear a lot of spatial cues naturally, it can actually sound unnatural to not have any spatial cues. You can hear what direction noises come from, how big a room is, and how far away noises are. With basic stereo mixing, things start to sound normal and a lot more interesting. With meticulous stereo mixing, and things start to sound immersive. I don't think the only goal is to match other similar audio - mixing is an art and slapback delays, early reflections, and reverb tails can paint an immersive scene.

Why mix in stereo? Most everything you hear now is in at least stereo. Listen to your favorite song on your headphones, it's in stereo. It also allows to tell an auditory story and paint a stereo picture. Those huge sounds are easily achieved in stereo. Think a HUGE rock mix for example. The two guitars panned left and right are right in your face, the drums being panned left and right makes you feel like you're sitting at the kit. Plus the vocals bouncing from side to side can make it feel like the vocalist is dancing around you.

In my experience , two speakers are better than one . I also assume mono can be created with one speaker . Anymore perspective will have to be billed hourly as a standard practice in my industry

Once you can hear the spatial cues, then you can control them. The Lazy Way (way less immersive) - Balance in mono - Pan different tracks center, hard left, or hard right - Add reverb, pingpong delays, and other stereo effects - Automate panning for movement - Generally avoid mid-side/L or R independent EQ and compression. Many of these plugins cause phase issues. - Check mono compatibility

There are many ways that this can be done: - Some audio interfaces have a mono/stereo button or an option in their companion software. - Every DAW has the ability to do this as well, for example in REAPER there is a button for this on your mix bus. - Finally, you can also utilize a monitor controller such as the Neuro or Big Knob to switch between mono & stereo with the push of a button. I'm sure there are other methods for switching between mono & stereo as well, but above all, the most important thing is to simply remember to check for mono compatibility & phasing issues before sending off your mix to a client!

I always take the whatever device the listener is using into account, but this has changed over time. For a game or app it used to be a crappy mono cell phone or tablet speaker, but these speakers have gotten better, and they’re in “stereo” now. Do they have the same stereo separation as headphones or good speakers, no, but they’re better than they used to be. Yep, mixing in mono is still a great tool for me to hear the balance of instruments.
