Security is built in not bolted on and based on a set of principles. For building secure systems from the ground up, you must use Security by Design concepts in your architecture. It makes sure that each part of a system only has the entry rights it needs to do its job, which reduces the damage that could be caused by a breach. My perspective is to understand the principles, how to architect for them and most importantly ensure they are governed for the outcome intended. "Security by Design Not by Chance" is easily said than done. Establish a dedicated, skilled security team, including cloud security standards, lead by CSO who should be reporting to CXO. Engage them during all the phases of software development. They should stay current and stay on top of latest threats and the mitigation. Make them responsible for training, help create Security Architecture for the enterprise/applications, and include them in the governance process (code scan, security testing etc.). Make sure all stakeholders (developers, architects, operators, managers) are trained on your security policy and apply it during design, coding and testing.
